CBSE 12th Topper Interview: Mridul Mehtani

CBSE 12th Topper 2023: The Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) announced CBSE 12th Results 2023 on May 12, 2023, on the official websites results.cbse.nic.in. CBSE Board Exams 2023 were held between February 15 and April 5, 2023. Class 12 CBSE board results overall pass percentage stood at 87.33. Mridul Mehtani, one of CBSE Class 12 students who scored above 90%, i.e. 92.2 % in CBSE 12th Board Exams, shared his preparation strategy, upcoming goals, career plans, tips for aspirants and more in an exclusive interview with Shiksha.com.

Coming from the Commerce Stream, Mridul is aiming to crack CUET and get admission to one of his dream colleges. Telling us his subject-wise marks, Mridul said, "I have secured a total of 461 out of 500. In Accounts, I have got 95/100, 89/100 in Business Studies, 96/100 in English, 92/100 in Physical Education and 89/100 in Economics. Check out some interesting excerpts from the interview below:

Q:   I got 74% marks in top 4 subjects in 12th (Science) CBSE .. What should I do now ?

A:
Science students try for b. Tech for which you need to have already appeared for entrance. If you did not then try to get in DUBAI, MU colleges with grade 12 score into BSc. You may also try physics honors, math honors etc. And in case you are interested in commerce or humanities, these options are still open for you

Q:   Will I clear the CBSE board exams 2025 if I obtain 33 percent in theory but not in practicals separately?

A:

No. It is necessary that you score a minimum of 33 percent in practical and theory exams separately. In case you're unable to score the minimum marks either in theory or practicals even when the total aggregate is 33 percent, you won't be considered pass.

Q:   How many subjects should be included while calculating class 12th CBSE board percentage?

A:
In aggregate, all five subjects' marks are calculated. If you want admission in a particular field in a particular college then maybe they will check your score in 4 subjects (English + 3 Subjects of Commerce or Science). Also, if you have Physical Education and some good awards(State or National) with you then you can be admitted through Sports Quota based on your performance in Sports. All the best.

Q: Congratulations on your result! How was your reaction after seeing the results? Did you score what you expected?

A: I am a night owl so I sleep till late. I was half asleep when I heard my mother trying to wake me up saying that the result had been declared. I was like she's kidding because a day before my sister was checking the result but in vain. My friend's mother called and confirmed that the result was out. I woke up and logged in to check my result.

Honestly, I was happy after seeing my result. Except for Economics, my scores were exactly as I expected.

Q: Please tell us something about your family background.

A: I come from a humble background. I stay with my mother and elder sister. My mother has always emphasized on the value of education for both of us. Our family hit rock bottom in 2021 when my father passed away, but I believe tough times are the test of an individual. We three held each other together and sailed through. I would like to believe that my hard work and my father's blessings combined have helped me achieve this win.

Q: Please tell me about your stream, Did you choose this stream by choice? How much have you score?

A: I opted for Commerce with Maths, although I wasn't sure about the latter at first. I was keen on Computer Science but it wasn't an option. So, I settled for Maths and I am not shy to say that has impacted my performance as I have scored the least in it because of my own mistake as I failed to complete the paper. But I am hoping it will help me with Hons courses.

Q: What was your strategy to score above 90%

Ans: I think it's all about being confident in your abilities. I took tuition and studied as and when I felt I needed to and religiously go through this topic. There was no fixed schedule or strategy. It was intuitive. I know where I lacked so I focused more on those subjects and topics, the rest practice makes one perfect.

Q: Who encouraged you the most in this journey?

A: Both my mother and sister are my biggest critics and cheerleaders. They were with me throughout the journey. Although I do not speak much at home, they both used to trick me to speak up my mind and share everything that bothered me.

Q: What was your routine during CBSE board exam preparation?

A: It was all about revision after a point and time. Once the syllabus is over, all you need to do is revise your syllabus and solve as many sample papers as you can. However, you can always go back to the basics for a quick run-through.

Q: What are your future plans? Which career path are you aiming for?

A: I am looking forward to CUET & CPT entrance exams. For now, I want to pursue a BCom/Economics (Hons) from Delhi University. I am hoping to score good in CUET and make my place in the cutoff list. I want to get the exposure that DU has to offer, as my sister has pumped me up with all the stories from her college days. Post my graduation, I will appear for CA intermediate and final groups. MBA too is on the list.

Q: What are your expectations with CUET?

A: As CBSE has advised that class XI and XII NCERT studied well is enough for CUET. I am following that religiously. I am also taking coaching for the same just to be better prepared and to know the exam pattern. I am also solving sample papers to increase my speed.

Q: Are you well prepared for CUET?

A: To be honest, the preparation will go on till the very last day. I'm taking online classes for it and also referring to NCERT books. It's all about revising syllabus over and over again.

Q: Which all courses and universities are you targeting?

A: I have applied at DU, JNU, GGSIPU, Jamia, and Ambedkar University for multiple courses like BCom, BCom (H), Economics (H), English (H) and mass communication. I want to keep all options open for myself.

Q: Please share some tips for students prepping up to appear in CBSE Board Exams 2024.

A: There are two things that matter the most, number one is your belief in yourself and second is your sincerity. Do not waste your time studying for hours if you don't feel like at that moment. Study when you think you will indulge in it sincerely. Do these two things rightly and everything will fall into place.
