The Uttar Pradesh government on April 27 directed all schools, irrespective of the boards they are affiliated to, not to hike the fees for the academic session 2020-21 amid the prevailing health and economic crisis.

The Uttar Pradesh government on April 27 directed all schools, irrespective of the boards they are affiliated to, not to hike the fees for the academic session 2020-21 amid the prevailing health and economic crisis created due to the COVID-19 outbreak. According to a statement issued by Uttar Pradesh Deputy Chief Minister Dinesh Sharma, if any school gets caught charging a hiked fee for the upcoming session, the additional amount will be adjusted in the coming months.

While addressing the media, Mr Sharma stated, "Following the unprecedented situation, which has emerged following the outbreak of COVID-19, all schools in the state have been directed not to hike fees. Due to the lockdown, there has been an adverse impact on the employment of parents, and hence are facing difficulties in deposting the fee."

The minister further added, "All the schools of all the boards in the state be it UP Madhayamik Shiksha Parishad (UP Secondary Education Board), CBSE, ICSE, International Baccalaureate and International General Certificate of Secondary Education should not hike the fee for the academic session 2020-21, and the fee of 2019-20 should be charged. If any school has charged hiked fee from the parents, then the same additional amount will be adjusted in coming months," he said.

Mr Sharma, who also holds the education portfolio clearly directed schools to let parents deposit fees on a monthly basis instead of a quarterly basis. The novel coronavirus pandemic led to the loss of job opportunities and cash crunch. The lockdown imposed in order to contain the deadly virus adversely affected the daily wage earner. Amid the prevailing emergency conditions, the various state governments, as well as the central government, took the measure of directing schools against the fees hike.
