Punjab government extended the lockdown in the state until May 1 and became the second state to extend the lockdown before the end of the nationwide lockdown.

Punjab government extended the lockdown in the state until May 1 and became the second state to extend the lockdown before the end of the nationwide lockdown. The Punjab School Board preponed the summer breaks i.e. from April 11 to May 10. The decision is taken considering the safety of the students and others due to the massive spread of COVID-19 virus in the country.

In order to cope up with the loss in studies, on April 10, the Punjab Education Minister Mr. Vijay Inder Singla informed the state cabinet that the government decided to prepone the summer vacation of both government and private schools in the state. The education minister declared that the summer vacation generally starts in the month of May now starts from April 11 and continues until May 10.

The education minister also added that the remaining examinations of class 5 and class 8 are canceled. All the students studying in these classes will be promoted to the next class based on the examinations they appeared before the imposition of the lockdown in the state.

However, the board is yet to make a decision about PSEB class 10 and PSEB class 12 exams.

So far, the Punjab Board conducted three examinations of class 5 before the lockdown began. The board decided to cancel the remaining two class 5 papers. For class 8, only practical examinations were pending, but now the results will be released based on the theory examinations only.

Mr. Vijay Inder Singla expressed that the parents were worried about the academic loss of their wards due to the nationwide lockdown and the decision of preponing the vacations would give relief to them. He further added that all private schools should also start the vacations from April 11 but they are free to extend the period as per their requirement.
