Mystory@Urvi Desai: My self-confidence kept me going during tough times
I wanted to become a medical professional but due to unfortunate circumstances, I could not realise my dream. I lost my father to a prolonged illness when I was in class 9. After his death, our financial condition deteriorated. I had a mentally disabled younger sister to take care of too. Thus, I had to take the responsibility. After completing class 10 we shifted from Valsad to Surat on my uncle’s advice. He helped us in our difficult time.
I chose Commerce in class 11 and 12 as I could not afford high fees of Science. I passed class 12 with 80% marks, I wanted to pursue MBA from any of the top colleges of Ahmedabad but my financial condition did not permit me. I was depressed with my situation when one of my teachers encouraged me to face the situation bravely; become self-depended and make a career. I can’t thank him enough for inspiring me to be self-dependent.
My first job
I took up a job of a sales girl at Adani super store during my vacation to arrange for college fees. My first salary was Rs 1800. Later on, I took admission in B Com course at Sir K P College of Commerce, VNSGU, Surat. Along with college, I took up a part time job as a tele-caller and receptionist at Kotak Life Insurance. After a year, I was transferred to administration and back office department. I bought a two-wheeler and a laptop from my savings. By the time I completed my B Com degree, I had three years of experience. After completing B Com, I joined Wockhardt Hospital as a receptionist. I was soon promoted and transferred to the accounts department. I enrolled in the PGDBA (Finance) programme of Symbiosis Centre for Distance Learning (SCDL), Pune and completed it successfully. My experience at Wockhardt helped me get the job of accounts officer at Vasan Eye Care.
While working at Vasan Eye Car, I got married. I had to quit my job after I conceived. However, after a gap of one year, I resumed my career. I got a new job at Nova Pulse IVF Clinic Pvt Ltd as Center Accountant with a salary of Rs 22000 per month.
Nowadays, I am playing multiple roles of taking care of my mother, my child, my home and my work. My husband and I have bought a house together. So, this is my story, my small journey from Rs 1800 to Rs 22000.
Self-confidence is everything
I faced a lot of tough times, but what kept me going was my self-confidence and support of my loved ones. I want to thank my mother, my teacher, my husband and all those who trusted me, encouraged me and inspired me to never give up.
The main factors that decided the course of my career was to provide for my family, complete my education on my own steam and make a place for myself in the society as a successful woman. If given a chance, I would like to study further for better career growth or appear for government competitive exams. I want to look after my family’s well-being better and give my child more time.
I feel that nothing is impossible. There are many factors which stop you from achieving what you want, but you will have to show grit and determination to overcome the hurdles. You have to stand for yourself.
What I learnt from my experience is that no job is small. There is no end to learning and so whatever happens to you, learn from it. Also, never differentiate between male and female, because both have equal capacity of doing any job. If everyone thinks like this no one will be jobless.
One should choose a career as per own capacity. Never think that if you’ve failed once you will fail again. Start all over again with greater dedication.
We are a developing country and the future is going to be bright, so don’t miss the chance of pursuing higher studies.
