New IIMs venture into executive education
New Indian Institutes of Management (IIMs) are stepping into executive education following an encouraging placement season for their first batch of graduating students, reported Livemint. Although these institutes are still operating from temporary campuses, they are looking to enhance industry linkage and increase revenue through this move.

IIM directors were reported saying that customized education programmes for corporate executives would help in building government and industry relations in addition to building industry capacity, which is important for placement of the current and future students. Besides that, premier B-schools operating from smaller towns would need a proper strategy to sustain a good campus-recruitment record.
IIM Rohtak will start both short-term and long-term executive education programmes in two months. Rameshan feels that such programmes will open up the mind and encourage students to do better academically as well as when in corporate life.
IIM Ranchi was the first among the new IIMs to venture into executive education with the launch of its 18-month, part-time executive programme last year. That along with several short-term courses and consultancy projects helped the institute generate a revenue of more than Rs 1.5 crore, last year. According to MJ Xavier, director of IIM-Ranchi, while the revenue is the goal, such courses facilitate the ecosystem needed for management education.
IIM-Tiruchirappalli's satellite campus in Chennai is offering a Post Graduate Programme in Business Management (PGPBM) with the aim to groom working executives aspiring to advance towards senior leadership roles. IIM Raipur will also enter the field in a few months. (Read more)

Many feel that this is a premature step as only three of the five new IIMs have seen their students graduate from the 2010-12 MBA programme. Director of IIM-Ranchi justified that the move will give corporate and real life exposure to both students and faculty when the institute is new and where not all the faculty members are veterans, as per the news report. Moreover, older IIMs seem to support the step taken by younger IIMs. Debashis Chatterjee, director of IIM-Kozhikode, one of the older IIMs, feels that it is a sensible move. He was quoted saying, management education is a performing art and it needs practice and improvisation.
