Shiksha spoke to some CEED 2019 aspirants to get an idea of the test pattern and difficulty level of the design entrance exam. Most of the students who took CEED 2019 shared that the test paper was as per their expectation and easy to attempt.
CEED 2019 Student Reaction: Exam Experience
Riya Shibu who is currently working with Ernst and Young shared that her exam was OK and she was able to complete her CEED paper on time. “Maths was a bit different from the usual but it was fine. There were some subjective questions also. The exam had questions under Part A and Part B. Like it was mentioned in the brochure, CEED Part A had only three sections and the marking scheme was exactly like mentioned by IIT Bombay”.
Having complete her Bachelor’s in Graphic and Web Design from LISAA School of Design, Navya Shree S revealed that if she clears CEED 2019 she would like to pursue Interaction Design course form IIT Bombay. Talking about her experience of giving the exam Navya said, “It was good. I completed the exam a little early and I don’t know whether that was a good thing or not. I was able to answer all questions”. Comparing CEED exam with last years’ paper she said, “Part A of the paper was quite similar to last years’ question paper of CEED exam. Nothing new”.
Confirming the same Prashant said that, “There was no difference in terms of difficulty level of CEED exam as it was the same as last year”. Elaborating further he said, “The paper was OK. I think the aptitude portion was decent and some people may have spent more time in solving the numerical questions. It was not anything different from what you would expect. It was like any drawing paper. Till the last few minutes I was drawing and trying to complete the creativity section”.
CEED authorities changed the test pattern and marking scheme a bit for admissions 2019 and regarding the same Prashant revealed that, “They changed the marks around but there was no difference in CEED exam pattern. Like the big question was not of 50 marks it was of 40 marks. I didn’t give the exam last year but I heard that last year there was an on-screen calculator provided, this year there was no on-screen calculator and you had to do a lot of mental calculation for Maths questions. So, you ended up spending more time in solving the numerical questions. The questions were not difficult but they were time consuming without the calculator”.
A Production Engineering student from NIT Trichy, Veena Sredhar shared that CEED 2019 “was not a surprise unlike NID Entrance Exam. The exam pattern was already put up on the website. I was well aware about what to prepare, what to expect and how to approach each and every section of the exam”. Elaborating further she said, “In NID you don’t get previous years’ question papers (NID exam) but CEED provides you with what material is going to be there and what type of questions you can expect. It was easy for me to come up with an approach like will I be able to attempt this question and is it my strength or my weakness and I was able to evaluate all these things prior to giving the exam. Even in the sketching questions I was able to evaluate my strengths and my weaknesses and so I knew which question I should attempt and which I should not so it was easier for me to go ahead and complete the paper. So, I think I attempted the paper well”.
Veena gave CEED exam last year as well and on comparing the difficulty level of the exam in each year she said, “To be honest I gave the exam for fun last year and this year was a solid attempt. So, it would be more of me increasing my skills as well”
CEED 2019 Student Reaction: Difficulty Level of Part A & Part B
For Part B of the exam students were given an answer booklet and they had to draw their responses on this sheet. “There were seven questions in Part B of CEED exam and we had to attempt four questions from them”, revealed Riya. She further shared that, “In one of the questions in Part B, few diagrams were given and we had to complete them like questions asked in NID DAT. For Industrial Design specialisation the question was that in monsoon season we dry clothes inside so design an industrial component for that”.
Talking about the difficulty level of CEED 2019, Navya said, “The difficulty level of Part A was medium, it was not hard or anything and Part B was easy. Marking scheme was exactly as specified for CEED exam. There were 45 or so questions in the exam. Part B had 4 questions out of which one was domain based and there was choice in this question and the other three were mandatory. The mandatory questions were on creativity based, sketching based and visualisation based”. Elaborating further about the subjective questions in CEED exam she said, “In the Creativity question we were supposed to use certain shapes to make anything we want like a character or a scene. In the domain specific question I chose Interaction Design and in it I had to create a device that would help kids to navigate their way through a bicycle”.
Wanting to pursue Industrial and Product Design from either IIT Bombay or IISc Banaglore, Prashant shared that “usually, CEED is way tougher than NID Entrance Exam but this year I believe they were of the same difficulty level and pressure. Primarily because NID increased the drawing questions this time”. Prashant selected Communication Design in the domain specific question and revealed that he had to create three hoardings for it of 30 feet by 20 feet. “It was a graphical question mainly about understanding the layout. And after you designed this you had to come up with three different slogans for the hoardings”, he said. Elaborating further he shared, “Part B of the exam we had to attempt on a separate booklet which was of good quality paper. In this booklet it demarcated where you had to attempt which question. The paper was good, very clear. There was no confusion. The questions in Part B were not very difficult, they were just very lengthy to draw”.
Talking about how she attempted CEED 2019, Veena Sredhar shared, “Part A of the exam was not that difficult. If you had gone through all the previous years’ CEED papers or the UCEED papers then you would know that there is nothing new. If I had to rate it on a scale of 0-5 with 5 being the easiest then I would rate CEED 2019 as a 4”. Talking about the difficulty level of CEED Part A exam, she said, “CEED Part A did not have much of GK. It had more questions from general logical reasoning and aptitude questions were there. GK was my weakness but then there were not many GK questions and I was easily able to attempt many questions. When I say GK was my weakness, then my weakness was photography and I didn’t attempt much of those questions. There were questions on Maths, MCQ and MSQs”.
Similarly, talking about Part B of the exam, Veena said, “Part B was similar to last years’ CEED paper. It had typography, visualisation and sketching questions. These questions were in the 2016 paper as well. Just the way of portraying them was different. Sketching question was good and the creative thinking question was unlike last year. This was because instead of giving objects like cricket, tyre etc., what they did this time was that they gave five frames and in it they gave us some shapes and they pulled in random things in the frame and you had to create your own idea out of it which could be a landscape or a cartoon. This was really interesting and I enjoyed the creative thinking part”.
Veena also gave NID exam this year and comparing the difficulty level of both the design entrance exams she said, “NID exam was more of sketching this year and CEED had sketching of 2 hours. So, I would say the difficulty level was almost the same”.

Students did not face any issue while giving CEED as a Computer Based Test (CBT). Navya said, “CBT was easier than what I expected it to be. There were no problems it was very good”. Confirming the same, Riya said, “CBT was fine, it was continuous, there were no glitches. It was perfect”.
Having given CEED exam last year as well, Veena said, “I already gave the exam last year so appearing for a CBT was not really new to me and I knew what to expect from the exam”.
