CEED 2020 Exam Analysis by Experts
CEED 2020 was held on January 18. Go through the difficulty level and drawing questions asked in CEED Part B exam.
CEED (Common Entrance Exam for Design), continues to be a standing Mecca for Masters of Design (MDes) aspirants. It is a three hour examination which is a blend of dual mode, an online exam for the objective type questions followed by a paper based drawing test. The computer based exam had three segments, NAT (Numerical answer Type), comprising of with questions with marking of +3/-0, followed by MSQ section comprising of 10 question marked at +3/ -0.2. The third segment comprised of 23 questions marked at +2/-0.5.
The drawing paper comprised of five questions in CEED 2020. Questions asked in CEED Part B exam were:
The first question: A woman selling fish had to be drawn with the details of her holding a towel to fend off flies. In this case the drawing of the female figure appropriate to her age, her posture with her wares (fish),her surroundings, back drop, the texture of towel (gamcha), the flies and other imagined details. The attire and accessories of the woman should suggest her economic background, marital status and also her region i.e. coastal dressing (Maharashtrian/ Goan/ Bengali/ Odian/ South Indian etc) would have added to the feel of her profession.

The second question linked itself to the first, where the same fish seller was to be shown reacting with anger/ irritation to her buyer when being pestered for discount, without making the buyer in the frame. The focus has to remain on the same woman but as per the change in her reaction, her stance and expressions, hand gestures had to be detailed to convey the same.
The third question has a few lines given in a block and the same image was repeated 10 times. The students had to incorporate the given images into a meaningful visual through line drawing in black and white only, composing them in 10 different interpretations and visualisation across 10 blocks each time differently. The trick here would be to view the block each time as fresh irrespective of the other blocks and the students should use the block from any direction as it would fuel their imagination differently each time, do zoom, mid and long shots and keep changing the themes like visualising a product in one frame, then human figure in another, then human expression in third, a situation in fourth, a process in another, a message based visual in next. Keep changing the viewing direction physically and keep changing the genres, it always works.
The fourth question was again very interesting, the students were given images of some flowers like lilies, tulips, hibiscus and other natural forms in three dimensional images and they had to draw their 2D images.
The fifth question had an image of an average toothbrush. The students had to identify five problems that exist in the design/ usage of the same, illustrating them in visuals across five given frames. This was problem identification question. Here the grip, the size of the brush, the bristle arrangements, density and surfaces, the cleaning issues, the contamination issues, packaging etc., all these angles and more could have been explored.
The evaluation format of CEED too sees a change this year, as from now onwards for the first time, both Computer Based Test (CBT) and Paper Based Test (PBT) will contribute to the final merit of the candidate with 25% weightage given to the CBT and 75% weightage to the drawing segment.
CEED result is expected to be declared on March 4, 2020, the merit will be drawn and the calls sent out.
Wishing All the Luck once again!
