Fashion Design Courses Admission Process 

The admission to fashion design courses depends on the type of course - degree, diploma, or certificate. The period of the course also matters.

  • Certificate courses - Generally, admission to certificate courses in fashion design is open to any candidate who has completed 10+2. Further, there is no entrance exam involved, as direct admission is the most prevalent mode of admission.
  • Diploma or advanced diploma courses - Marks of the qualifying exam will be considered for admission. In addition, there may also be a personal interview.
  • UG and PG courses - Top colleges like NIFT, ÌIAD, and School of Fashion Technology conducts their own entrance exam for admission to undergraduate and postgraduate fashion design courses. 
  • PhD courses - Admission is conducted based on merit of national-level exams like CSIR UGC NET.

Eligibility Criteria for Admission to Fashion Designing Courses

Fashion design courses can be undertaken at 10+2, degree, and PhD levels. The eligibility criteria for admission to various courses are given below.

Certificate course

This is typically an elementary course that can be undertaken by practically any candidate who has passed their 10+2 or in some cases degree exams.

Diploma courses

10+2 pass. Some institutes demand that cutoff marks be at least 40%.

UG courses

Admission is most often based on entrance exams like NIFT, NID DAT, UCEED, etc.


The minimum eligibility is around 50% marks in the 10+2 qualifying exam.

PG Courses

This course is open to candidates who have completed their UG courses. Admission is based on exams like CEED, UID Design Aptitude Test, and NID DAT


The eligibility criteria is around 50% marks in the degree qualifying exam. 

Popular Entrance Exams for Admission to Fashion Design Courses

As mentioned above, admission to certificate and diploma fashion design courses are based on merit of qualifying exams, whereas admission to UG Design and PG Design courses is more or less through entrance exams. 

At the undergraduate level, popular entrance exams include NIFT Entrance Exam, NID Entrance Exam, UCEED, SAT India, Pearl Academy Entrance Exam, SEED, and IIAD Entrance Exam.
