NIFT Entrance Exam Analysis 2019 for CAT (BDes Paper)

The BDes CAT paper carried three questions only where there were choices within questions.

NIFT CAT 2019 First Question & Solution for BDes Admissions

The first question was based on product design. It said - Visualise and draw any one of the following, as they would be in the year 2050.  Colour the product using dry colours.

(i) Umbrella

(ii) Door Lock

(iii) Lunch box

This question needed the students to visualise the need and quality of life 31 years down and then innovate the products as per the same. For example, use of plastic in Lunchbox will certainly be non-existent given the growing environment and health concerns, so an alternate material should be suggested besides adding smart features like Bluetooth heating system, convertible spacing system, self-steam cleaning system and many more. A door lock could be biometric configured and connected to emergency numbers and fenced with electric current besides being designed with high aesthetics. An umbrella could be a small instrument generating an invisible, water repelling electro- magnetic shield whereby it need not be carried in hand and can be size adjustable. It is advisable to write the product details in terms of creative concept and functional innovation.

NIFT CAT 2019 Second Question & Solution for BDes Admissions

The second question said, “Using the following shapes i.e. Circle, rectangle, Hexagon, Tear drop & Triangle, compose any one of the following: (a) Personal Computer (b) Wind Chime (c) Letter Box”. This had to be supported with a write up of 100 words. Here, the form exploration keeping the chosen product’s application/ function intact was of importance. Also, the write up allowed for creative aesthetic expressions as regards inspiration and concept of the composition design.

NIFT CAT 2019 Third Question & Solution for BDes Admissions

The third question of Process drawing was a repeat format from previous year. The aspirants had to depict the process on any one of the given in four frames.

(i) Budding & blooming of the Rose flower

(ii) A Shirt on a clothing line from wet to dry

(iii) A bird taking flight from ground to sky

This question tested the students on their observation of day to day life. The representations of nuanced details in each frame at four stages is crucial here, besides composing the whole block with suitable back drop. Eg: The dripping water puddle beneath the wet shirt should be shown shrinking and drying too as the shirt dries up across the four stages. Colours too play a very noticeable role here as the wet shirt looks darker that the dry shirt. Similarly, the feet and wing coordination at different stages of the flight for a bird also show the level of observation.

NIFT Entrance Exam Analysis 2019 for CAT (MDes Paper)

The MDes Paper of NIFT Entrance Exam 2019 was a departure from routine, where the focus was not only on drawing skills but also on clarity of visualisation and detailed and nuanced communication of the same. Two of the three questions asked comprised of descriptive writing.

NIFT CAT 2019 First Question & Solution

The first question asked the students to write an essay on the process of writing with pen and paper as compared to typing on laptop in context of which one do they prefer. This gives a glimpse into the kind of personality the candidate has as it’s a very personal account of their individual choices.

NIFT CAT 2019 Second Question & Solution

The second question was again descriptive which asked them to share their experience of being blind folded for a day and listing five difficulties they would face with greater details about the most uncomfortable difficulty. This question gives an insight into the eye for observation and sense of details and ability to feel and describe the nuances.

NIFT CAT 2019 Third Question & Solution

There was only one drawing question, the third question, with four drawings. It was a product design question where the clients were defined. The students were to design spectacles for:

  1. A traffic police
  2. School kids
  3. Sports person and
  4. Public transport passenger

Here, besides the creative aesthetics, it was very important to consider the needs for the respective clients defined, the size, material, colours, prints or the lack of it and any function innovation possible. Eg: The school kids need light weight and bright spectacles while the sports persons need a good grip which makes it slip proof in wake of all the action that they undergo. Traffic police would certainly need UV and pollution protection. Here detailed description of design and product innovation with identification of need is advised.

5

NIFT entrance exam for MDes admissions had a few more questions across sections taking the total number of questions to 120. The difficulty level of the paper was determined keeping in mind that the students should be able to approach the paper. Where Maths concentrated upon testing the students on their calculation ability, reasoning focused more on their logical and thinking faculties.
