Jewellery engineersJewellery in its various forms, fascinates one and all. It's a prized possession, a valuable gift, and for those with aptitude, the industry offers a wonderful career option too. India is one of the biggest markets for the jewellery sector. In order to understand the ins and outs of the industry and to claim expertise in the domain, one has to spend years to understand the trade secrets of the jewellery business.

Now there are jewellery institutes coming up across the country to impart sector-specific training to students. The importance of education and knowledge sharing is being felt by this sector looking to enhance profits by employing specialized manpower.

Jewellery engineers give an attractive look to jewellery before it arrives in the market. To understand the jewellery industry in a better way, one must have an idea of three major levels in the jewellery domain:

  1. Mining
  2. Production
  3. Distribution or retail

In earlier times, the industry had a conventional approach where everyone did everything, but now it's developing an orientation for specialization. One can work in various departments of jewellery design such as crafting, production, assessment, designing, sales, supply-chain management, or the finance department. One can also get good packages under these departments ranging from Rs 3 lakh to Rs 3.5 lakh per annum.

The industry follows an organized approach. Because it deals with natural substances on a daily basis, acquiring knowledge of geology, gemology and mineralogy can give a boost to your career start. The industry also needs connoisseurs in the domain to meet the growing needs of the industry. There is an urgent need of skilled and professional workforce to handle the complexities at different stages of designing and manufacturing.

To meet this need, All India Gems and Jewellery Trade Federation (GJF) has collaborated with National Skill Development Corporation to establish a Gems and Jewellery Skills Council of India. This council will develop a set of comprehensive guidelines to improve the manufacturing and retailing of jewellery, whereby consumers will be benefitted.

Other developments in the industry are around e-commerce and social networking. The industry needs professionals who can better understand their customers and their needs in terms of style and preferences.
