The future prospects of a career in this sector are quite promising with evident growth in an array of fields such as domestic boutiques, retail of Indian-wear brands, export of craft-related products, online retail, exhibitions and ethical fashion.

Types of courses offered in Women’s wear fashion with traditional aesthetics:

Basic eligibility to pursue these courses:

Students from any discipline can apply for Pearl Academy's above mentioned course in Women’s Wear with cultural context and traditional crafts as a common thread across all modules. The basic selection criteria are mentioned below.

Eligibility: Candidates who have obtained qualification equivalent to 12 years of schooling, from any recognised School/Board in any discipline are eligible to apply for admission

Competitive Examination: All eligible candidates will be required to take an entrance level interview to give the course team the opportunity to make an initial evaluation of students’ strengths (to be developed) and weaknesses (to be addressed). A panel consisting of 2-3 senior faculty members will constitute the Interview Board. Candidates are marked on a "consensus" basis by members of the panel, based on a pre-determined selection-profile of qualities and skills that are necessary to successful functioning as a professional in the industry, such as ability to work in a team; commitment; honesty and sincerity; general awareness; leadership skills; et al.

Selection of candidates: Selection of students is strictly on merit of interview against set criteria. Carrying ones exemplar of works may support this assessment.

What is taught in these courses?

Course Curriculum – Diploma in Fashion Women’s Wear programme

The programme is offered in 3 terms of 13 weeks each covering inputs in the main areas of women’s wear range development and its realization for day wear and occasion wear, and their visual representation. It gives an understanding of fabric properties and their surface ornamentation using crafts and its sourcing. The business aspect would also be looked into by analysing needs and demands of Indian clients, small scale garment production and entrepreneurship.

During these three trimesters, the approach is to develop comprehensive understanding of fashion industry in India and globally in congruence with the listed aims of each module.

Modules

Trimester 1: Skill Development Stage

1. Fashion Designing I: This module provides students with an opportunity to have a comprehensive understanding of the world of design, its principles, aesthetics and terminology and the environment in Indian and international market. It also imparts a basic understanding of fundamentals of fashion combined with flat drawing skills necessary for visual communication.

2. Fashion Realization I: This module provides students with an opportunity to extend the range of basic technical skills used in order to make clothes and their use as design tools.

3. Textile Techniques: This module provides students with an opportunity to enhance awareness about Fabric and Fibre in order to support their fabric choices and design decisions. It also gives an opportunity to know different ornamentation and finishing techniques and how they are applied to a variety of different fabrics.

Trimester 2: Exploration Stage

1. Fashion Designing II: This module provides students with an opportunity to create, manipulate and rework visual depiction of garments as working drawings to communicate ideas in industrial language.

2. Fashion Realization II: This module provides students with an opportunity to explore traditional and creative approaches to flat pattern cutting and draping techniques prevalent in industry and to enhance understanding of fit, specialist and generic garment construction techniques specific to women’s wear in Indian context.

3. Textile & Crafts: This module provides students with an opportunity to develop student’s understanding of India as an international handicraft resource and how it operates in relation to its identity, sensibility, techniques and market as well as design through combination of talks, museum visit, escorted craft cluster visit and personal explorations.

4. Fashion Industry Context: This module provides students with an opportunity to research and have cultural awareness about Indian fashion which would lead to understanding trends through visits to museums, galleries and key retail outlets and fashion weeks and exhibitions.

Trimester 3: Project Stage

1. Concept and Design Development: This module provides students with an opportunity to work on brief set by industry practitioner to create a framework of providing an insight into who will wear conceptualized clothes and how to go about designing to meet their needs. The project aims at designing with greater focus and understanding where intensive research in a variety of media as well as design development process with connect to cultural and craft sensibilities to produce two finished garment.

2. Advanced Realization: This module provides students with an opportunity to develop essential skills of self-directed and self-managed learning to translate complex 2D designs into fully realized garments within a defined envelope of resources and inputs received to produce experimental and modern design.

3. Entrepreneurship Development: This module provides students with an opportunity to expand their understanding of the various nuances of the fashion business; and industry practices. This involves basic manufacturing principles, costing, branding and marketing

Key teaching & learning methodology:

Project work, learning through research, critiques also known as jury, presentations, workshops, talks, craft cluster visits, industry visits, museum visits, demonstrations, peer learning, independent study, self-evaluation, technical teaching and support.
