Fashion Communication Job Profiles

Many Indian fashion brands are making their presence felt in the international market. Thus, now is the apt time to make a career in the field of Fashion Communication.

Here, first of all it is important to understand what exactly one needs to do in the field of fashion communication. Typically speaking, in this field one needs to work on design strategies, portfolios, brands and the likes. Apart from this, one also needs to work in areas such as styling, visual merchandising, graphic design, advertising, public relations, display and exhibit design as well as creative writing.

Graphic Designer

After pursuing a course in fashion communication, one can become a fashion designer wherein he/she will be expected to provide design solutions for various products/activities on websites, posters, books, advertisements, magazines, exhibitions and displays, computer games, product packaging, corporate communications and also work on building corporate identity, that is, giving an organisation a visual “brand”.

Visual Merchandiser

In such a job profile one is expected to develop, deliver and thereafter communicate visual concepts as well as strategies in order to promote retail brands, products and in-store services, either online or in catalogues. Visual Merchandisers may also opt to work with museums, galleries or work to create visual concepts for events.

Retail Space Designer

As a retail space designer one needs to work on various aspects of design as well as construction of retail space at the same time. In such a job profile, one needs to work towards making the store/retail space assigned to them more attractive for customers. The success of a retail space designer is measured by the overall footfall of the store. Designers in this field need to understand that their designs shouldn’t overpower the product that their organisation/client is trying to sell but work in such a manner that they are able to create a favourable environment for the products that are being sold.

Fashion Stylist

In such a job profile, one has to advise people/celebs on what clothing as well as accessories to purchase for wearing in magazines, special events, television shows and also for everyday wear. 

Fashion Photographer

As a fashion photographer one has to capture moments/brand products/models such that the designs or products made by designers are presented in the best possible way to the target audience. A fashion photographer is expected to highlight all the features of the product in the pictures as per the brief shared with them.

Fashion Journalist

A very powerful profile in the fashion industry, a fashion journalist is expected to write about the latest trends in clothing, footwear and accessories for websites, newspapers and magazines.

Event Manager

In such a job profile, one works on designing the creatives of the entire event right from the stage backdrop to the layout of the main event area, food area and the likes. Apart from this, an event manager is also expected to give inputs regarding the decoration, theme and props to be used in the event.

PR Manager

Here, one has to use any medium of communication to build, maintain and manage the reputation of their clients. A PR Officer typically communicates key messages, mostly as third party endorsements in such a way that information/key message reach the target audience and brand image is established among the masses.

Fashion Advertiser

Such a job profile can overlap with the tasks allotted to a fashion photographer. A Fashion Advertiser is expected to write or supervise the production of an advertising message. Thereafter, fashion advertisers advise on the location of shoot, clothes and accessories models need to wear along with the angles and shots to be taken as per the ad message formulated by them. The key task of a fashion advertiser is to use attractive words and phrases such that they create an impulse among the masses to purchase the product or idea being sold.
