Mystory@K S Deenarakshani:How I chose my course and college
As a child, I always dreamt of being an ENT specialist. But then as time passed by and I completed my higher secondary schooling, I understood that ENT wasn't my cup of tea. I started realizing that my creativity and my talent was more to do with art and craft. Eventually, I ended up realizing that Fashion Design was the right choice of career for me and likewise my course of study was finalized.
Fashion Design being my main objective I tried all possible colleges and institutes I could get in touch with and seek admission through an entrance exam. I applied for NID (National Institute of Design), NIFT (National Institute of Fashion Technology), DJ Academy Coimbatore, PSG College Coimbatore and many more.
The TIPSGLOBAL Institute, Coimbatore wasn't there in my choices because I didn't know that the college offered an Integrated Sandwich course for Fashion Design. I knew this college because I was a student of the TIPS school. So since it is the same Institution which runs the college, I got to know about the Institute and the courses it offered. It is actually a course named MSc (5yr Integrated) in Fashion Design. I opted for this because at the end of 5 years I would be qualified as MSc MBA in Fashion Design. This is a very knew system offering a dual degree program and that too in the field that I am interested in. Apart from that, the college has one of the best infrastructure be it the classrooms, hostel accommodation, food or other facilities. It is also located out of the city, giving a pollution free, soothing atmosphere to the students. These are the main reasons behind me choosing this college.
How I cracked college admission
The TipsGlobal Institute is best known for its quality standard. The Institute was very particular in selecting only students through entrance tests. They expect the students to have the required knowledge in the field to further handle the course. I went personally to the Institute and after a tour through the Institute, I was asked to attempt an entrance examination in the Institute premises. The Institute was very particular about my language skills and my mental ability skills. After the entrance exam was over, a personal interview was conducted by one of the academic coordinators of the Institute. All the aptitude testing is done before a student is considered eligible for the course. So this was how I cracked the entrance. I was true to myself on what I spoke in the interview about myself. That's the main reason I got through. I did not undergo any separate preparation for the entrance exam in this Institute as I was preparing for other fashion design college entrances.
Since NID and NIFT are big Institutes, there was a requirement for coaching classes. I took a class during my school days to prepare for entrance exams. This coaching class taught me more about how to sketch and also played an important part in giving me required exposure to the field of fashion. This actually helped me get through the entrance in NIFT. But I wasn't able to join because the campus is very far away from my locality and my parents didn't want to leave me alone away from them. So subsequently, I used that knowledge to get through in this institute.
What I gained from my college years
Being a student of The TipsGlobal Institute, I have actually learnt a lot so far. The atmosphere is really good to learn new things. We are taken for field visits and the Institute brings in new qualified people to give us lectures in their area of specialization. My time is very well spent during the college hours. I am in my second year and by now we have conducted two fashion shows in our college. We design garments, go fabric hunting and stitch the designs. Since this is an Integrated course, there are Fashion as well as MBA subjects. But I love to attend the Fashion related subjects more than the Management subjects. I like the subject which is oriented to garment construction and sewing. That's very interesting and you never know how time passes by when we sit on a sewing machine. It just feels great when we wear the garments that we design and stitch or do the same for somebody else and gift them. I know how that feels because I have designed for my cousin and she has worn it in front of me. That was one of my best moments.
Besides education, I love dancing and I take part incultural events that happen in our college. I dance in groups with my friends when any occasion is celebrated or during inter-collegiate festivals. I am a classical dancer and I alsoperform western dance now in college.
I always wanted to take responsibility as a representative to start an eco-club in our college and make sure that I bring in maximum participation in the eco-club and all of us put effort in planting new saplings in and around the campus and in our locality. This is one of my biggest unfulfilled dreams. To be frank, I am a very reserved kind of a person who doesn't want to exhibit all her talent to the outer world just because she is bothered about what the outside world would say. So this character has made many situations emotional and problematic for me. After joining this college I met different friends who helped me in knowing the disadvantages of being such a person. My friends taught me a lesson that being reserved is a huge loss for my personal life. I tried overcoming that and now I am much better than how I was earlier. This is a very big turning point in my life because from being dependent I have learnt to become independent as everybody is busy with their own life and no one is ready to stop and look at others. It is true that when we learn to face things directly then success is always a guarantee. I am very happy that I chose this college for setting up my career. I am 100 percent sure that I am on my right track so far in achieving my destination.
