Industrial design is an activity that deals with products and objects that are used for practical functions. Industrial designers organize and design articles, products and materials in such a way that serve the purpose for which they are intended along with appearing visually attractive. They combine their artistic talent with research they do on the product use, marketing, production methods, and materials to create the most functional and appealing design and to make the product competitive in the market.
Automotive design is mainly concerned with the development and appearance of road vehicles which includes motorcycles, trucks, buses, coaches, and vans. Automotive designers create concepts using sketches and computer-aided design programs for the visual appearance, as well as functional performance, of vehicles. Automotive design is practiced by designers who usually have an art background and a degree in industrial design or transportation design.
Product Design is the process of creating a new product to be sold by a business or enterprise to its customers. It is primarily involves the efficient and effective generation and development of ideas through a process that leads to new products. Product Designers design articles, products and materials for commercial manufacturing firms. They are an integral part of the ‘business' or ‘design industry'. Their designing skills take care of both the practicality of the products they design as well as their visual appeal.
Eligibility:
One of the necessary requirements for industrial designing is a bachelor's degree in Industrial design/Mechanical/Civil engineering. Bachelor of architecture degree holders are also eligible to apply.
Applicants who have passed the engineering degree in any of the streams of Mechanical /Automobile / Production engineering are eligible to apply for the course of automotive designing.
For product designing, the eligibility criterion to pursue graduation is a pass in the intermediate exam from science streams with Physics, Chemistry and Maths subjects. Applicants who possess a bachelors' degree in product designing can go for post graduation programs in the respective fields. Aspirants should attend different entrance exams so as to get admissions for both the undergraduate and postgraduate courses.
Career prospects:
Industrial designers are employed by various manufacturing firms. However, students can also go for architectural, engineering, specialized design services firms and related services.
On the others side, design departments of manufacturing firms and industries employ Product designers. Students can also look out for jobs in consulting firms. Besides, product designers are also hired as specialists in ceramic design work in industries manufacturing table ware, sanitary wares, light fittings, pottery, decorative porcelain and materials for electrical and other industries.
A qualified automotive designer can easily grab lucrative opportunities which are usually accompanied with attractive remuneration packages. Designers can also seek employment in multimedia movie production and ad development team for designing various sports and hi-tech car models used in most of the movies today.
