5 Common myths about online exam busted

The transition of exams from the traditional pen & paper mode (offline) to the online mode is fast taking place. From national to state level exams, are all being conducted in both online as well as offline mode now. Private universities too are half way trying to catch up with this online exam trend.

However,  the number of students opting for the online mode is very low in comparison to the offline mode. For instance, take JEE Main 2018. Out of the 11.5 lakh aspirants who registered for the exam this year, only 2.25 lakh students opted for the online mode.

To help students get a clearer idea of the online system, let’s squash some of these common myths doing the rounds amongst students.

Myth 1: Offline exams are easier to handle

Fact: A lot of students that shiksha.com spoke to believed that offline exams are easier to handle. However, that’s not the truth. Online exams are equally manageable and user friendly like the offline exams. It’s all about practice.  As many online mock tests you take, the more acquainted you become to the online system.

Myth 2: Once selected, can’t change answers online

Fact: Most of the national level offline exams comprise MCQs (multiple choice questions). Once marked, the answers cannot be changed. If changed, the question looks blotchy. Well, that’s not the case with exams that are conducted in the online mode. You can go back and change the answer as and when you like.

Myth 3: What if we face technical glitches?

Fact: Online exams are conducted at places which are highly equipped to deal with technical glitches.  In fact, at each of these centres, you would find qualified IT professionals and in case such problem arises, either you would find enough buffer computers or technicians to help you right there at that time. Also, remember that the time you lose in rectifying the technical error or changing the system will be compensated.

Myth 4: There are no question booklets in online exams

Fact: Though there are no question booklets in the online exam, but the questions appear on your screen with answer options. In fact, just like the offline exam, you also have an instruction page displayed on the screen before the test actually commences. Moreover, the time that you spend in reading those instructions will not be a part of the actual exam time.

Myth 5: No liberty to answer questions/sections that I wish to first

Fact: This is one of the most common myths amongst students, which in reality doesn’t hold true. Students who have taken online exams have reported that they were given all the liberty to answer questions or sections that they wanted to first and that there was no such restriction of following a pattern to answer questions.
