AICTE revamps engineering course curriculum to meet industry needs
With an aim to meet industry requirements, the All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE) has revamped the engineering and technical course curriculum across the country.
Launched by Union Human Resource Development Minister Prakash Javadekar recently, the revised curriculum will lay more emphasis on practical knowledge than theoretical. For instance, as part of the curriculum, students will be engaged more with laboratory assignments rather than on theory.
Applauding the move, the minister also stressed on the importance of updating and reforming the curriculum every year to meet industry needs and make students industry ready.
The step has been taken to address the complaints that nearly 60 per cent of students graduating out of technical education institutions are not industry-ready and still require honing.
Here’s what you can expect from the revised engineering curriculum:
- The number of credits required for theory has been reduced to 160 from 220.
- 2 to 3 month internship (both industry and social) has been made mandatory for engineering graduates to connect with the need of the industry and society at large. It would also help them acquire the skills required for job.
- 14 out of 160 credits will be for summer internship.
- Availability of best teachers, infrastructure and scholarships to all students.
- Every student, on admission, will be offered a mandatory induction training to reinforce the fundamental concepts and the required language skills for technical education.
Besides core subjects, the students as part of the curriculum will also study the Vedas, Puranas and tarka shastra – the science of dialectics and logic. The course on Essence of Indian Knowledge Tradition will teach students Indian philosophy and linguistics, apart from yoga and the Indian perspective of modern science.
