Aligarh Muslim University organises online course in Disaster Management

Keeping in mind the current coronavirus crisis and Amphan cyclone, the Aligarh Muslim University had organised two-day online course short term course on "Disaster Management and its Mitigation."

The Aligarh Muslim University had organised two-day online course short term course on "Disaster Management and its Mitigation."

The online short term course was organised by the Department of Civil Engineering, Z H College of Engineering & Technology, Aligarh Muslim University (AMU) under the Technical Education Quality Improvement Programme (TEQIP-III).

"There is a need for the construction of earthquake-resistant buildings as various natural as well as man-made hazards have become a common occurrence," said Professor Tariq Mansoor while presiding over the inaugural session of the online short term course.

Professor Mansoor said the country is currently facing the coronavirus pandemic and the financial crisis due to it; therefore experts need to disseminate scientific knowledge through online digital mode.

During the opening session of the online course, Professor Abdul Baqi, Chairperson and Coordinator of the Short Term Course, highlighted the achievements of the Department. He said the disaster management is the need of the hour and the department will be in the forefront to provide solutions and consultancy in the area of earthquake resistance design and testing of the structures.

Professor M M Sufyan Beg, Principal, Z H College of Engineering & Technology, highlighted the achievements of the college and congratulated the Department of Civil Engineering for being at the forefront of organizing such important courses. He also said India has been traditionally vulnerable to disasters on account of its unique geo-climatic conditions. Floods, drought, cyclones, earthquakes, and landslides have been recurrent phenomena, therefore, disaster risk reduction measures are required to build a more disaster-resilient society.

Professor Pervez Mustajab, Dean, Faculty of Engineering & Technology, said disasters are an acute threat to the global development. He further said that given these circumstances, global efforts on disaster risk reduction are needed and all the relevant stakeholders have to ensure that the disasters do not derail sustainable development and poverty alleviations.
