Chemistry: Preparation Strategy for JEE (Main) 2014

Syllabus for JEE (Main) is quite similar to the CBSE syllabus of Physics, Chemistry, Mathematics. Some topics are also common in JEE and that of the syllabus of Class 11th & 12th of state boards. About 25% questions in the exam are easy, 50% are average and 25% are difficult. However, the cut-off for JEE (Main) is generally around 60% for NITs & IIITs.

In the year 2013, JEE (Main) paper was of 360 marks in total. There were 90 questions (30 each in Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics),each of 4 marks along with 1/4th negative marking.

In Chemistry, 40% questions were easy, 50% Medium level and 10% difficult. More Weight age was given to chapters in Physical Chemistry compared to Inorganic & Organic Chemistry.

After going through the new marking scheme and paper level, experts at FIITJEE could conclude that if a student secured more that 290 out of 360 he could be sure of getting into one of the 30 NITs. However, with a score of 195 and above one could aspire to study in one of the Self Financed Deemed Universities/Universities/Other Institutions under JEE (Main).

5 mantras to crack Chemistry in JEE Main 2014:

  1. It is observed that those who crack JEE (Main) are the ones who do well in chemistry. A week before the exam.
  2. Give 4 hours to brush up your concepts of organic and inorganic for 3 hours and give 1 hour for physical.Try to attempt chemistry in the first hour as it has some easy questions and if you can solve these question in the first hour, you will feel confident with more accuracy, this has been proved that if you are confident then your efficiency increases.
  3. Inorganic and organic also cover huge part in JEE (Main). This can be done alone with organic and inorganic.
  4. Chemistry is the most scoring of all. Just read the concepts of thermodynamics and chemical equilibrium.
  5. Some questions from these parts are just conceptual type. So clear your concepts and you can do 40% questions from these two topics.

Tips to crack Chemistry in JEE (Main) 2014:

  • Conceptual clarity, application skills and awareness to the prescribed syllabus should be the main focus.
  • Practice the most relevant numerical daily to develop speed. Pay special attention to the topics like Mole concept, Chemical Equilibrium and Electrochemistry.
  • Adopt a careful and patient approach for Organic chemistry giving particular attention to the topics like Stereochemistry, GOC (General Organic Chemistry) and Functional Group Analysis.
  • In Inorganic chemistry most of the questions which are asked are really conceptual, concerned with structures, processes and applications. Special attention is a must to the topics like Chemical Bonding and Coordination Chemistry.

Recommended: Always attempt theoretical questions first and then questions which require calculation. It is advisable to avoid numerical questions in the first 10 or 15 minutes of the exam.
