DU may flunk exam revaluation voxpop
As part of the semester system being introduced at DU, revaluation of exam papers may be done away with. The news has invited mixed reac- tions from teachers and students.
A notification by the Empo- wered Committee for the Imp- lementation of Semester Sys- tem (ECISS) has suggested the system of 
revaluation of papers will be done away with.
The notification dated December 18, 2009 said, "The evaluation of the answer-scripts would be centralized. There would be joint evaluation of scripts by 3-4 examiners each one evaluating answers to one or two questions of all the scripts. Consequently, there will be no need of continuing with the practice of assigning ficti- tious roll numbers on any answer script. The system of revaluation of answer scripts would also be discontinued."
Students and teachers expressed worry that if this sys- tem leads either to poor mark- ing or errors, there will be no redressal mechanism for the student.
"The exam branch has to cope with such huge number of students that errors and bias- es may occur and students should have some redressal mechanism. Also, doing away with the measures of secrecy such as assigning fictitious roll numbers might lead to pres- sures on teachers who are marking the papers," said Harriet Raghunathan who teaches English at Jesus and Mary College.
But the proponents of the semester system feel that such a step will do away with the unnecessary wastage of time, energy and money. "The fact that three to four examiners are checking the paper at the same time uniformity in marking sys- tem will be ensured," said SK Garg, principal of Deen Dayal Upadhaya College and a mem- ber of the ECISS. He also added that since a large number of stu- dents opt for revaluation a lot of time and money is wasted.
Students too have mixed opinions. "I think that revalua- tion is a very good way of ensur- ing that we get the marks that we deserve. I had sent my papers for revaluation in the first year and I got my marks increased," said Shubhoshree Sarkar, a III-year Economics (H) student.
