How is JEE Main Rank Calculated
JEE Main 2016 ranks have been announcec on June 23 for admissions to NITs, IIITs and GFTIs. The Rank calculation and normalization of ranks for JEE Main have always been a concern amongst aspirants and have stirred controversies around the same. Thus, till the ranks are declared, let's talk about how JEE Main ranks are calculated to derive the All India Rank of candidates.
How is JEE Main AIR determined?
All India JEE Main ranks are determined by arranging the composite scores of JEE Main candidates in Merit order.
To calculate JEE Main All India Ranks the following is required:
- Percentile obtained in Class 12th Board
- JEE Main score
- Corresponding JEE Main Marks against the percentile for the Board and at an All India level
JEE Main Rank list is calculated from giving 60% weightage to JEE Main score and 40% to the normalized score of Class 12th. The composite score of both are arranged in merit and the rank is awarded on this basis. The official website of JEE Main states, " On the basis of score in JEE (Main)-2016 and normalised score in Class 12th or equivalent qualifying exam (60% & 40% weightage respectively), separate rank lists will be prepared for admission to B.E./B. Tech. and B. Arch/ B. Planning (in institutions other than IITs)".
About JEE Main Composite scores:
JEE Main composite scores are derived by:
(JEE Main Marks)*60+ (Normalised score of Class XII marks)*40/ 100
JEE Main 2016 Normalization Process:
What is Normalization?
Normalisation is the process of ensuring that students neither are benefitted nor receive any disadvantage by the difficulty of their Boards. The very process is used in other countries with similar issues as in India.
Take a glance below to know more the normalization adopted in JEE main for admission to NITs/IIITs/CFTIs on the basis of class 12th qualifying examination marks. JEE Main normalization process involves the following steps:
Step 1: Knowing normalization and percentile
What is normalized score?
Basically, normalised score of your class XII marks is the average of two JEE Main scores. Confused? Well, the two JEE Main scores we are talking about are the scores derived by directly linking your Class XII Results to overall JEE Main Results.
The formula used for normalization in JEE Main is: C = 0.6 * AO + 0.4 * Bfinal, where:
AO : Aggregate marks obtained by each student in JEE Main
Bfinal: 0.5 * (B1 + B2); where B1 is JEE Main aggregate marks corresponding to percentile (P) at the All- India level and B2 is the JEE Main aggregate marks corresponding to percentile (P) among the set of aggregate scores obtained in the JEE-Main by the students of that board.
Let’ first derive the percentile here:
Example: Suppose in a particular Board, the no of candidates registered is 13918 and no of candidates appeared is 13711. A Candidate who has scored 60% marks in the Board and 6865 candidates have scored below him; his Percentile score will be calculated as follows:
Percentile score for 60% marks in the Board = 6865 x 100/ 13711 = 50.07
Now, the board will arrange the marks of each candidate and calculated percentile in ascending order. Above is one such example.
The JEE Main 2016 website states, “In order to calculate normalized qualifying examination marks following data is considered. 1. Marks of all the students in that Board whose subject combinations meet the eligibility criteria of JEE-Main. 2 Marks of all the students in JEE (Main) – 2016”.
Take a look at the table below which depicts the percentage score in a particular board. For example – the candidate belongs to XYZ of 13711 candidates who meet the eligibility criteria of JEE Main.
Step 2: Arranging of JEE Main score of all candidates in ascending order and find out percentile for each score
Let’s say, around 11.5 lakh aspirants appeared for JEE Main for which the scores have been declared. Here, we will arrange the JEE Main score of 11.5 lakh students. This will help us deriving the corresponding percentile. Take a look at an example below.
The above table shows the JEE Main scores and percentile for All India
Step 3: Arranging JEE Main score of all candidates of Board ABC in ascending score and find out percentile for each score
At this step, we will take into consideration, the JEE Main scores of candidates from the same board and then arrange it in ascending order. This will also help in calculating corresponding percentile.
Take a look at an example below:
The above table depicts JEE Main scores and percentile for board ABC.
Step 4: Calculate B1
B1 is JEE Main aggregate marks corresponding to percentile (P) at the All- India level. To calculate this, we need to find out JEE Main score which is corresponding to the matched percentile.
Here, B1 is 48.
Step 5: Calculate B2
B2 is the JEE Main aggregate marks corresponding to percentile (P) among the set of aggregate scores obtained in the JEE-Main by the students of that board.
Here, B2 is 80
Step 6: Calculate Bfinal
Bfinal = 0.5 * (B1 + B2)
For the purpose of admission to CFTIs where it has been decided to use the JEE Mains performance and the Normalized Board performance in the 60:40 ratio, the composite score for drawing the merit list was computed as: C = 0.6 * AO + 0.4 * Bfinal
Subjects used for JEE Main normalization and calculating percentile score:

Note: In respect of 3, 4 and 5, the best mark in a given category will be chosen |
Note: In case a candidate has appeared in six subjects in the qualifying examination, the subject (fifth or sixth) with better marks is considered. |
Important Notes:
Difference between Percentage and Percentile
The percentage of marks and percentile are totally different entities hence the candidates should not confuse with both the above terms. Here’s the difference.
Percentage |
Percentile |
Percentage is a number out of 100. |
Percentile Score of a candidate in a Board or JEE (Main) will reflect how many Candidates have scored below that candidate in his/her Board or JEE (Main) Examination. A Percentile score is the value below which a certain percent of observations fall. |
