How To Handle Tough Topics in JEE Main Physics? - Preparation Tips by Expert
By Aman Goel
Physics plays a very vital role in both JEE Main and JEE Advanced. Its marks are generally a rank-deciding factor. So, you need to have command of this subject to get a decent rank. In this blog, I will mainly tell you how to handle tough topics in Physics. First thing is that every student has different topics as their weak points. Some will find Simple Harmonic Motion (SHM) as a tough topic while others may struggle with Electricity and Magnetism.

So, you can do a few things that will help you all along in the course. They are as follows:
- Make a short note of all relevant facts and formulas of the given topic. This is the most basic thing you can do to solve this problem. Then memorize and understand it thoroughly. This may seem like a very basic thing to do. But I can assure you that this is quite an effective process. And although how simple it may seem, very few students maintain this routine for the whole duration of their preparation.
- Never try to solve the problem intuitively. This is one of the most common mistakes done by the students. Try to rely on facts as much as possible. If you are at the initial stage of your preparation, then you should first write what is given in the question and what is asked. Then analyze it and write the relevant formulae. This process will be a bit longer but after some practice, you can directly skip to the step where you apply the formula.
- Read the question very carefully. Generally, in JEE Advanced problems some critical information is hidden in the statement of the problem. For example, in some problem, the temperature of a water vary from 2° to 6°. Now, the hidden information which you have to observe in this statement is that water attains its density maxima at 4°. This type of small information can make any problem really tough.
- Now the last and, according to me, the most important piece of advice is related to how you solve the problem. The beauty of the Physics lies in the fact that you can master almost any topic by solving about 20 - 25 different questions. I know, this may seem a little bit far-fetched, but this is true. The secret behind this claim is how you solve the problem. It is as follows:
-
- You should understand that your aim is not just to get the right answer in any way. Think carefully before writing any steps and make sure that step is totally logical. You should have a proper justification for every step of your solution.
-
- After you get the right answer, the next step is to analyze your solution and think that, is there any other way? Doesn’t matter if it is a short or long method. After solving in all the different way you can think of, the next step is to try to change the question. Just think of how the same concepts of the question can be asked in a different way.
-
- And the last step is to try to frame a different question with the help of previous one. For example, you can make the condition more complicated like add some extra force or change the smooth surface to a rough one or whatever you can think of. This step is almost same as the previous step but it needs more research. Try to make as much of variation as you can.

If you follow this process, then by solving and after researching that one question properly, you would be able to solve a large set of decent problems. How large and decent the set is, will totally depend on how much seriously you followed this process.

These are some of the tips which you can use to handle most of the topics of Physics.
But still, there may be some topics which you would find extremely difficult and may struggle in solving the even basic question. To counter this problem you may follow these steps:
Q: How many months are required to prepare for JEE Mains exam?
Q: How to crack JEE Mains in first attempt?
Hi aspirant!
Clearing the JEE Main exam in first attempt is not a difficult task. If we see the year over year statistics, the ratio of students who clear JEE Main in first attempt is high in comparison to students who dropped a year after class 12. One thing that makes it easy to clear JEE Main with class 12 is that students are in regular touch of most JEE syllabus. To score good marks in JEE Main in the first attempt, it is advised that you study class 11 and 12 topics thoroughly, clear all the concepts and solve mock test papers. Also, NCERT books which you study in class 11 and 12 are the best books for JEE Main preparation. Students must study NCERT properly and solve all the questions in the book and do not memorize the concepts as some students do rather understand the concepts.
Hope this cleared your doubt. Best wishes!
Q: How much time is required to prepare for JEE Mains?
The time required to prepare for JEE Mains depends on several factors, such as your current knowledge level, the amount of time you can dedicate to studying, and your desired level of excellence. However, here are some general guidelines:
- Ideally, you should start preparing for JEE Mains at least 6-8 months before the exam date. This will give you ample time to cover the entire syllabus, practice mock tests, and analyse your performance.
- If you have already started preparing, it's essential to make a time table and stick to it. Allocate at least 6-8 hours daily for studying, and ensure that you take regular breaks to avoid burnout.
- It's important to note that the amount of time required to prepare for JEE Mains can vary depending on your current knowledge level. If you have a strong foundation in the subjects, you may require less time, whereas if you need to build your fundamentals, you may need more time.
- Additionally, it's important to remember that studying smartly is more crucial than studying for a long time. Focus on understanding the concepts, practicing challenging problems, and analyzing your performance regularly.
In conclusion, the amount of time required to prepare for JEE Mains can vary depending on several factors. However, ideally, you should start preparing at least 6-8 months before the exam date, and make a study plan that suits your needs and schedule. Remember to study smartly, practice regularly, and analyze your performance to achieve your desired score.
- Study the relevant theory very thoroughly. You can use many different sources for this. The most basic is H.C. Verma. This book contains enough theory from JEE Main point of view. But for JEE Advanced you can refer to your coaching notes or you may also read up about the topic on the internet but make sure that you don’t go too deep into it. It will only waste your time. Just make sure that you understand completely whatever you are reading. You can take the help of your teachers or batch mates for this.
- After reading the theory you should look at the solved examples very carefully. Then solve the similar type of question. Make note of your mistakes. This will give you an insight into where you are going wrong. You should solve all the examples of H.C. Verma. This should give you some confidence. If you still have some doubts, try solved examples from other sources.
- Now, you are ready to attempt previous years’ paper. Try the problems of JEE Mains first. Don’t worry about the time it takes to solve. Remember this topic is your weakest point so you can afford to spend more time on this problem. If you are unable to solve the problem look at the solution and make a note of where you went wrong. Then solve the other problem, if you still have to refer to the solution then that means you need more practice. But don’t get frustrated if you are not able to solve for the first time. Repeat step no.2. Then try again. Do the similar exercise for previous years’ JEE Advanced problem. Remember JEE Advanced problems are much more complex than JEE Mains so it will require a lot more effort, so don’t get frustrated. Eventually, you will be able to solve the problems in the affordable time.
These are all the tips and advice which I can give to you so that you can handle all the topics of the Physics. But you should remember that it is pretty hard to follow all the things which are mentioned above. That’s why your mind should be disciplined. Don’t lose focus on your goal. Try to stay motivated. And always ‘hope for best and prepare for worst’.
Best of luck!

Q: What is the minimum score or rank required in JEE Advanced to get into a good IIT?
The definition of godd IIT can be relatable. The candidates who wish to get admisison to the first generation of the IITs like IIT Bombay, IIT Madras, IIT Kharagpur, IIT Kanpur, IIT Delhi, IIT Guwahati, and IIT Roorkee must have a high score of 250+ marks out of 360 marks. However, this is not applicable for all courses offered by these IITs. Every course and IIT has different demand and seat ratio which effects the admission of the cabdidates. Hence it is very difficult to say what will be the minimum score or rank required in JEE Advanced to get into a good IIT.
Candidates must aim to score as high as possible in the exam to be get seat in the first generation of the IIts as these IITs see the most demand.
Q: What is a safe score for JEE Advanced to get an IIT?
It is a very relatable thing. A good score in JEE Advanced will depend on various factors one of them being the cutoff. Further, the cutoff will depend on various factors like the difficulty level, paper pattern, number of seats in the IITs, number of candidtaes taking the exam and so on. Therefore, it is difficult to say what will be a safe score. However, 300+ is a safe score in JEE Advanced if the total marks in the paper is 360.
JEE Advanced 2024 cutoff has been the highest in the past 6 year. This year the cutoff marks has been 109 marks for the Common rank list (CRL) out of 360 marks. For the GEN-EWS and OBC-NCL rank list the cutoff marks is 98; for SC/ST/Common-PwD/GEN-EWS-PwD/OBC-NCL-PwD/SC-PwD/ST-PwD is 54 marks and for Preparatory course rank lists it is 27 marks.
