How to score high in JEE Chemistry Paper
Preparing for Joint Entrance Examination (JEE) is one of the most daunting tasks, especially when you are running out of time. In this phase of the year, when JEE Main is a few months away, having strong basics in Physics, Maths and Chemistry can really open up a lot of avenues for aspirants in the entrance exam. Here, the time left for JEE preparation must be used as a tool and not as a crutch. Therefore, strategic planning or subject-wise preparation is the need of the hour. In this article, we are going to take up Chemistry that may assure you good marks in JEE.
Out of three subjects (Physics, Maths, Chemistry) for JEE, Chemistry is the most scoring one especially if it’s prepared regularly with proper planning. Unlike Physics and Mathematics, Chemistry is less about applications and concepts. It is more about planning. To make the most of Chemistry, it is essential to understand the fundamental concepts clearly. Having a good understanding of concepts will enable students to solve all types of Chemistry problems. Chemistry is divided into the following three parts:

- Physical Chemistry
- Organic Chemistry
- Inorganic Chemistry
Physical Chemistry
Physical Chemistry plays a vital role in evolving underlying principles of Chemistry, which is more like mathematics and physics. It spots and explicates the physical and chemical properties of the matter. At the JEE level, Physical chemistry begins from the basics of the mole concept, quantities at the atomic level, and goes to energy, thermodynamics, and kinetics which forms the basis of how reactions occur. Other topics from Physical Chemistry like the concentration of solutions, chemical equilibrium, atomic structure, thermodynamics, or chemical energy are very important for chemistry in JEE.
Q: How many months are required to prepare for JEE Mains exam?
Q: How to crack JEE Mains in first attempt?
Hi aspirant!
Clearing the JEE Main exam in first attempt is not a difficult task. If we see the year over year statistics, the ratio of students who clear JEE Main in first attempt is high in comparison to students who dropped a year after class 12. One thing that makes it easy to clear JEE Main with class 12 is that students are in regular touch of most JEE syllabus. To score good marks in JEE Main in the first attempt, it is advised that you study class 11 and 12 topics thoroughly, clear all the concepts and solve mock test papers. Also, NCERT books which you study in class 11 and 12 are the best books for JEE Main preparation. Students must study NCERT properly and solve all the questions in the book and do not memorize the concepts as some students do rather understand the concepts.
Hope this cleared your doubt. Best wishes!
Q: How should I prepare for JEE Mains and Advanced together?
Problems of physical chemistry are a bit complex and hence and require lots of training. However, if concepts are at your fingertips, then solving the physical chemistry part becomes a lot easier. Therefore, it is advised to practice every chapter carefully and understand the concepts thoroughly.
Physical chemistry has a weightage of 30-40% in the JEE Chemistry Paper and hence it is most important among the Physical, Organic, and Inorganic Chemistry.
Topics like Solid State, Gaseous State, Chemical Kinetics, Chemical Thermodynamics, and Equilibrium should be on top of your preparation list.
Organic Chemistry
The second most important part of the JEE Chemistry Paper is Organic Chemistry, which is based on the compounds of carbon. Although Organic Chemistry in itself is relatively vast at the JEE level, it goes with General Organic Chemistry. It begins with the concept of Resonance, IUPAC Nomenclature, Hybridization, Isomerism, Hyperconjugation, etc. Apart from these, Stereoisomerism also proves to be the most critical part which sometimes acts as a stumbling block for most of the students.

In conclusion, the amount of time required to prepare for JEE Mains can vary depending on several factors. However, ideally, you should start preparing at least 6-8 months before the exam date, and make a study plan that suits your needs and schedule. Remember to study smartly, practice regularly, and analyze your performance to achieve your desired score.
Q: Is one month sufficient for JEE Main preparation?
Q: What is JEE Advanced rank list?
JEE Advanced rank lists are prepared based on the aggregate marks in JEE Advanced. Only candidates who appear for BOTH Paper 1 and Paper 2 will be considered for ranking. There will be no waiting list for ranking. The ranklist is used in JoSAA for allocation of seats in the IITs. JoSAA is held online only. All the candidates who are eligible for admission will have to participate in the joint seat allocation process by filling in their preferential choices of the courses and institutes. If the aggregate marks scored by two or more candidates are the same, then the following tie-break policy will be used for awarding ranks: Candidates having higher positive marks will be awarded a higher rank. If a tie exists then a higher rank will be assigned to the candidate who has obtained higher marks in Mathematics. If this does not break the tie, a higher rank will be assigned to the candidate who has obtained higher marks in Physics. If there is a tie even after this, candidates will be assigned the same rank.
Organic Chemistry contributes to approximately 30-40% part of JEE’s Chemistry paper. It serves to be the most important part of Chemistry which demands practice.
Topics like Halides, Hydrocarbons, Alcohols & Phenols, Aldehydes & Ketones, Carboxylic acids, etc. from Organic Chemistry must be pinned in the mind of every student.

Inorganic Chemistry
Inorganic Chemistry is all about Chemical reactions in the most primitive method. Here, the study is based on Mendeleev’s Periodic Table as the elements are divided according to their groups. The other scoring part of Inorganic Chemistry is the Coordination Compounds followed by analytical chemistry, chemical reactions, and Metallurgy. The JEE Chemistry paper contains questions that are direct and based on the direct application of concepts. If you are well versed with the basic concepts then answering these questions can be a second job for you.
25-30% is the weightage of Inorganic Chemistry in JEE’s Chemistry paper. Though it seems to be a very small weightage, students cannot afford to get away with this section. Remember, even a single mark can help you get a good Rank in JEE. So, practice as much as you can and you are surely going to boost your AIR.
Also, to make the entire preparation process of preparing Chemistry for JEE simpler and fruitful, we have drafted a few guidelines as a study strategy for your reference:
- Focus on clearing concepts, application skills, and completing the syllabus on time.
- Chemistry demands practice. Numerical in Chemistry may appear simpler, but require lots of practice to ensure no errors are made. Pay attention to every detail mentioned in the question.
- The key to emerging victorious in Organic Chemistry is Patience. Give ample time to topics like general organic chemistry, stereochemistry, etc.
- Chemistry is highly scored in every section. If you find yourself a bit behind in any one of the topics, focus on improving the other two sections.
- Attempt Theoretical questions first followed by numerical questions.
- Must solve at least 10-15 previous years’ question papers before appearing in JEE. This will help you get the right temperament for the exam.
A consistent study is a key to success in JEE. So, whether it is about Chemistry, Physics, or Maths, the vital part in every Section is unswerving preparation and regular revision of concepts. With only a few months left for the JEE, pulling up the socks and setting yourself on a course to reach your Goal is the call of the hour. Wishing you good luck with JEE!
