The Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) declared the All India Engineering/Architecture Entrance Exam (AIEEE) results on Saturday, June 9. AIEEE screens students aspiring for admission to various engineering and architecture colleges across the country.

Approximately 11 lakh candidates appeared for the test this year, out of which 4.1 lakh have been shortlisted for the next phase of online counseling. The qualifying candidates also include those who have already cleared engineering entrances like JEE and BITSAT.

15-year-old Sandeep Pathry from Delhi topped the AIEEE scoring 346 out of 360 marks. For Pathry who is from a government school, this was his second attempt. Sixth on the merit list, Mansi Sood topped among girls scoring 336 out of 360 marks. (Read more)

Success stories have been pouring in from various cities. Raghuvansh Raj Saxena from Lucknow secured all India rank 23 in AIEEE. He is also the topper in the state entrance examination (SEE), and holds an all India rank of 31 in the prestigious Indian Institute of Technology - Joint Entrance Examination (IIT-JEE).

In Karnataka, Sagar Honnungar from NPS, Rajajinagar, ranking 3rd in the engineering stream of the state CET, has also topped the AIEEE in the state securing all India rank 21. For the OBC category, Pratik Fegade from Mumbai, a topper in the IIT-JEE, has also made it to the top list in AIEEE. Fegade who has already chosen Computer Science engineering in IIT-Bombay, secured the top position in the country in the OBC category and fifth among the state toppers, reported Daily News Analysis. However, there seems to be a misconception among the students that the IIT-JEE is tougher than AIEEE. Fregade who secured all India rank 16 in IIT-JEE was ranked 38th in AIEEE. Similarly, all-India IIT-JEE topper Arpit Agarwal secured the 9th rank in AIEEE. On the other hand, many other students took AIEEE as a backup for the IIT-JEE.

AIEEE determines admission to 23,676 seats (approx.) for B.E./B.Tech and 855 seats for B.Arch/B.Planning in institutions like the National Institutes of Technology, deemed universities, technical institutions and other government-funded institutions.

As per latest news, IIT Kanpur has revolted against the HRD ministry's decision to introduce a new common engineering test from 2013 which allegedly threatens the autonomy of the IITs in terms of conducting admission exam, structuring curricula and evaluating their students. The premier institute has resolved to conduct its own entrance test in 2013. IIT-Delhi and IIT-Bombay are also likely to follow Kanpur's lead. (Read more)
