Once again, the team representing India at the IPhO 2012 mainly comprises IIT-JEE toppers, reported the Indian Express. The final team was announced by the Homi Bhabha Centre for Science Education (HBCSE) on Wednesday. Bijoy Singh Kochar (JEE rank 2) from Mohali, Jeevana Priya (topper among girls and rank 21) from Secundarabad, Kunal Singhal (18) from New Delhi, Rahul Trivedi (42) from Lucknow and Pulkit Tandon (58) from Jabalpur are some of the JEE toppers that will form the team. The HBCSE has been training and selecting students for the physics Olympiad since 1998.

The selected students have made it to the final team for IPhO through a rigorous selection process. Professor Vijay Singh, national coordinator, Science Olympiads from the HBCSE told Indian Express that students who have a good analytical ability do well at both (Olympiad and JEE). Moreover, students are duly guided on relevant topics right from the beginning to prepare them suitably for an international team.

The Olympiad selection procedure is much more difficult than JEE, feels Jeevana Priya, who was a gold medalist at the 2012 Asian Physics Olympiad. Perhaps a similarity in syllabus between JEE and the Olympiad gives JEE toppers an edge over other students. According to Singh, it is no surprise that the team has got IIT-JEE toppers this year as well. (Read more)

The selection process for the Indian team started in November 2011 where 43,000 students participated in the first level examination conducted by the Indian Association of Physics Teachers (IAPT). 307 students were shortlisted for the second level or Indian National Physics Olympiad (INPhO) examination. The final team was selected out of 41 students after an intensive orientation-cum-selection camp.

JEE 2011 all India topper Prudhvi Tej, Shubham Mehta (rank 2), B Sai Kiran (4), Nisheeth Lahoti (5) and Sumegha Garg (12 and topper among girls) were among the team members that represented India in the IPhO last year. Piyush Srivastav (2005), Raghu Mahajan (2006), Shitikanth (2008) and Nitin Jain (2009) were some of the JEE first rankers who also took part in IPhO.
