JEE Advanced 2017 Counselling Suspended Till Further Notice

The supreme has lifted the stay on JEE Main and JEE Advanced Counselling via JoSAA 2017. The counselling process has resumed from July 11. Due to this, the schedule of JoSAA 2017 too has been revised. Check JoSAA 2017 revised schedule here.

The Supreme Court has suspended JEE Advanced 2017 counselling for admissions to IITs (Indian Institutes of Technology) till further notice. A bench comprising of Justices Dipak Misra and A M Khanwilkar restrained the High Courts from entertaining any writ petition related to IIT counselling and admission process from today, July 7.

The move by the court comes after an IIT aspirant, Aishwarya Agarwal filed a petition in the court on June 28 against the awarding of bonus marks to all JEE Advanced 2017 test takers. Agarwal had sought the apex court's direction to declare the awarding of "bonus marks" as incorrect which not only violated her right but that of other students as well.

Besides seeking an interim stay on the merit list and the counselling, the petition argued that bonus marks should be awarded to only those candidates who had attempted the respective questions and not to all the test takers. According to the petitioner, the decision would cause serious prejudice to her other deserving aspirants and that it would impact her rank in the merit list. This would further steal away her chance of admissions to her choice of institutes.

The official website of JoSAA 2017 also confirms the suspension of counselling. An official notification on the website states, " As directed by the Honourable Supreme Court of India on 7th July 2017 (JEE Advanced 2017), admission and counselling process has been suspended till further orders".

Due to this, JoSAA 2017 counselling for JEE Main candidates, for admissions to NITs, IIITs and other CFTIs too have suspended. The website states, "JoSAA Counselling(JEE Mains): Due to suspension of counselling and admissions to the seats through IIT JEE Advanced, counselling for JEE Mains 2017 will also remain suspended till further notice".

Soon after the declaration of JEE Advanced 2017 results on June 11, it was announced that the IIT Madras will be awarding 18 bonus marks for 5 questions in Paper 1 and Paper 2 of the exam which was held on May 21. Extra marks in JEE Advanced 2017 were granted in the wake of a printing inconsistency.  JEE Advanced 2017 was organised and conducted by IIT Madras.

Around 2, 20,000 aspirants were eligible to appear for JEE Advanced 2017. Out of these, only 1, 59,540 appeared for the exam and approximately 50,455 engineering aspirants qualified the exam this year.
