JEE Main 2014 Topper: Srinidhi Prabhu to join IIT Madras with AIR 1
After securing a rank of 133 in JEE Advanced 2014, emerging as the JEE Main 2014 topper with an All India Rank 1 was an unimaginable feat for Srinidhi Prabhu of Hyderabad.
A native of Udupi district, Srinidhi hails from Karnataka board and is the son of Shashidhar Prabhu who works as a finance head in the Indian Academy of Science, Bangalore and Shobha S Prabhu who works as a scientist at DRDO Bangalore.
A die-hard fan of comic books and novels, this young lad loves playing cricket, badminton and computer games in his free time.
In a quick interview with shiksha.com, Srinidhi talks about his incredibly unbelievable success and his plans for the future.

Q. How are you feeling being the JEE Main 2014 topper? Did you expect it?
I am feeling very excited. Actually I can’t express my happiness in words because I did not expect to emerge as the JEE Main 2014 topper. I expected to be amongst the top 20-25 toppers but not this, not AIR 1.
Q. How long have you been preparing for?
I started preparing when I was in Class 9th.
In 9th and 10th, I took my coaching classes from BASE and for 11th and 12th, I went to Narayana Integrated coaching and also took distance learning from Resonance.
Q. Can you share your class 12th Board marks , your score in JEE Main and your rank and score in JEE Advanced?
I scored 590 out of 600 in 6 subjects in 12th boards. However, for JEE Mains, they only consider the marks of 5 subjects and there I got 499/500.
In JEE Mains, I secured 336/360, while I got 275/360 in JEE Advanced. As for the ranks, I was placed at 133rd in JEE Advanced.
My board normalized marks was 333 and overall normalized marks was 334.8!
Q. Also, can you share the breakup of your marks in JEE Main and Advanced?

Q. You were ranked 133rd in JEE Advanced and 1st in JEE Main. How did your parents react to it?
Actually, my parents and I aimed for IITs since the very beginning. So, with the rank of 133, I got into IIT Madras.
This is what we dreamt and thus, my parents were happy then and now.
Q. Which institute were you vying for and which is the course you aim to pursue?
I always wanted to get through IIT Madras and pursue B.Tech in Computer Science.
Q. Which board are you from? How different is the syllabus for both ? your boards and JEE?
I am from Karnataka PUC Board. As far as the syllabus is concerned, I think JEE Mains encompasses some extra topics. However, for Advanced, they mainly focus on higher level problems with few basic ones.
Q. Which other exams have you taken?
Besides JEE Main and Advanced, I have taken Karnataka CET and I stood first in the state. Besides this, I took BITSAT and scored 406/450.
In KCET, I scored was 174/180. The break-up of my marks was:
Physics – 60/60
Maths - 58/60
Chemistry – 56/60
I also grabbed the 18th rank in KVPY.
Q. Any tips for aspirants taking the exam next year?
I think, I would just like to say that focus on the theory and understand the concepts well before solving the problems.
Q. So, tell us something about your family?
I have a small family – My father, my mother and me. My father is the finance head in Indian Academy of Sciences and my mother is a scientist at DRDO. I do not have a sibling.
Q. What are your hobbies and what do you like doing?
I like playing cricket, badminton and computer games. However, I really enjoy reading comic books.
Q. What are your plans for the future?
After B.Tech, I want to pursue either my MBA or MS. If it’s, MS, I would like to go abroad but if it’s MBA, I would like to pursue it from the IIMs in the country.
