Low cut-offs are indeed a good news for students as the possibility to get through JEE Advanced has increased.  However, it will have little effect on admissions.

Though the cut-offs have been declining over the past few years but a dip of 19 marks for general candidates came as a surprise this year. To find out possible reasons behind the low cut-offs, we spoke to experts and students.

According to FIITJEE expert, Ramesh Batlish, the decrease in cut-offs was primarily to accommodate the additional 20,000 students who will qualify for JEE Advanced 2017. This year 2.2 lakh students across categories will qualify for JEE Advanced.

“This will have little effect as more students will qualify and get selected for admissions to IITs as well as NITs. Seats will not remain vacant. There will be no major effect on top rankers”, he added.

Take a look at the last 4 years cut-offs to appear for JEE Advanced below:

We ran a poll on social media to know what students had to feel about it. While majority of them felt that high difficulty level of the exam was the reason behind the dip, others thought that the low cut offs were to accommodate more students across colleges.

Here’s what students had to say:

Ram Chugh: The basic idea behind is that they want more of students to appear in the advance just because increase in number of colleges and seats but the advance level is very much high so at last one who performs will get into IIT.
Huma Sheikh: Definitely it could be the pressure, it could be the distractions that led the results go low. Or another reason could be that Due to negligence of some private institutes in proper cut-offs students are losing their concentration and interest for doing 100%.
Rajat Pathak: A student cannot be judged completely based on a 3 hour examination....in order to avoid this, more number of students can be selected from first round to be judged again in the second round. This will be like a second chance to those who have done well throughout 11th and 12th, but failed to do the same in 3 hours.
Prashant Kaushal: High level of difficulty can't be the reason as 100 percent marks was achieved this year.
Shiwansh Jaiswal: There is increase in no. of seats and some deserving students are also getting a 2nd chance
