JoSAA stands for Joint Seat Allocation Authority and has been set up by the Ministry of Human Resources Development (MHRD). The Authority manages and regulates joint seat allocation for admissions to 97 institutes including 23 IITs, 31 NITs, 23 IIITs and 20 Other-Government Funded Technical Institutes (Other-GFTIs). From 2016 onwards, students unhappy with seat allocation could withdraw admissions after every round except the last one. For 2017, aspirants have to remember the following points:

  • Withdrawal option is NOT available in the last round of seat acceptance period.
  • Physical reporting at admitted institutes is mandatory for students joined in NITs, IIITs and Other-GFTIs immediately after 7th round of seat allocation.

The main idea behind this concept is to avoid thousands of seats going vacant in engineering colleges across the country. Moreover, it is believed that Joint seat allocation will make the whole process of admissions smoother, effective, efficient, transparent and a lot faster.

Check out JOSAA 2017 eligibility here.

JOSAA 2017 registration process includes the following steps:

  • Filling-in of choices: Candidates may fill-in their choices of Institutes and branches in decreasing order of their preference. Candidates are strongly urged to fill-in as many choices as possible.
  • Locking of choices: Candidates MUST “lock” their choices. For candidates who do NOT lock their choices, their last saved choices will be locked automatically when the time-window for filling-in of choices closes.
  • Number of rounds of seat allocation: JoSAA will conduct seven rounds that is 1st through 7th rounds of seat allocation for academic programs offered by Institutes under JoSAA 2017.
  • Seat acceptance: Candidates allotted a seat must pay the seat acceptance fee (through e-Challan/SBI NetBanking) and get the documents verified at any reporting center (josaa.nic.in) for provisional seat acceptance .
  • Participation in subsequent rounds: A candidate is required to fill option for ‘freeze’, ‘slide’ or ‘float’ the choice of academic program.
  • Dual Reporting: If in a subsequent round, a candidate’s allotment from NIT+ system changes to an IIT/ ISM, the candidate MUST report ONCE AGAIN at an IIT reporting centre, similarly if a candidate’s allotment from IIT/ISM changes to an NIT+ system, the candidate MUST report ONCE AGAIN at any NIT+ reporting centre, failure to do so will result in forfeiture of seats allocated in both NIT+ system and IIT/ISM.
  • Withdraw option: A candidate, who has already accepted a seat, can withdraw the seat by reporting at a reporting center before the fourth round of seat allocation.

Important Notes:

  • All candidates who have appeared in JEE (Main) 2017 are eligible to register for seat allocation in NIT+ system (except IITs & ISM).
  • All candidates who have declared qualified in JEE (Adv) 2017 are eligible to register for seat allocation in all participating Institutes.
  • Registration: Aspirants who do not register within the specified time window will not be able to seek admission for this academic year.
  • Filling-in of choices: Candidates who fail to fill-in choices within the specified time window will not be able to seek admission for this academic year
  • Dual Reporting: Two times reporting required in case of seat allotment changes from NIT+s system to IITs and vice versa.
  • No modification of locked choices – once locked, choices cannot be modified.

To avoid the delay in admissions to IITs, NITs and other engineering colleges, this year, school education boards across the country needed to submit the top 20 percentile cut-off marks for Class XII to JOSAA before June 10. “IITs and other institutes have informed the COBSE about the problem they face during the admission process if school boards delay this. June 10 should be last date for providing such information which is vital for the admission process", one of the government officials was quoted as saying.

The decision was taken in a meeting of Council of Boards School Education in India (COBSE). The council encompasses school boards and the Cental Board of Secondary Education(CBSE).

One of the sources was quoted as saying, " All the school boards have been asked by COBSE to furnish the top 20-percentile cut-off, which is a qualifying mark for JEE main. The information will be used for preparing the cut-off for the engineering exam".

For securing a seat at IITs or NITs, securing 75% marks or being in the top 20 percentile of a school is a must. Thus, without class XII scores, JoSAA would fail to commence the seat allocation process.
