Sumanth R Hedge secured an All India Rank 2 in KCET (Karnataka Common Entrance Exam) 2017 exam whose results were declared on May 30. For this topper, it was all about cracking JEE Mains and JEE Advanced. KCET was something that got covered in the way.

Aiming to get into IIT Bombay or IIT Madras, this Bengaluru boy is a student of VVS Sardar Patel PU College, Bengaluru. Besides scoring 98.333% (total score - 99.167%) in KCET 2017, he also secured 586 out of 600 in his pre-university exams. According to him, his success mantra was to get the basics right and follow what his teachers taught at his school and coaching institute.

In an interview with Shiksha, Sumanth R Hegde, KCET 2017 Topper with an AIR 2 talks about his preparation strategies, future plans and the importance of coaching classes.

I was very happy after seeing the result . I was expecting a rank within top 10.  Getting second rank gave me immense pleasure.  My parents were very excited and happy about my performance.

My score in JEE Mains was 320/360 and all India rank was 93. Subject wise JEE Mains 2017 score :

• Physics -105 /120
• Chemistry - 115/120
• Maths - 100/120

KCET 2017 subject wise score :

• Physics - 60/60
• Maths -60/60
• Chemistry - 57/60

I have been preparing for JEE Advanced exam for two years. KCET got covered in the way.

Preparation strategy was to be focused during study hours and utilitize it to maximum extent while not straining myself .

JEE Advanced requires a thorough understanding of topics and hence I first concentrated on understanding concepts and later concentrated on speed and accuracy, since the examination is time bound.

If I felt I was weak in a particular area, I would first try to learn the basics, the foundations once again and then practice problems on the topic .

I would like to join IIT Bombay / IIT Madras . I am currently undecided on the branch but it would probably be Mechanical/ Electrical Engineering.

I have taken BITSAT 2017 exam. Ranks are yet to come.

I wouldn't say it's absolutely required, but JEE coaching by BASE definitely helped me a lot .

NCERT books are definitely very important for KCET and Mains . Apart from that, modules provided by BASE also helped a lot. I  also referred books by Cengage publications which were very useful.

Just that one needs to have the curiosity to learn more and explore. One should be focused while preparing for the exams. One shouldn't pressurise himself too much.

My father is a mechanical engineer and is managing director of a joint company. My mother is senior assistant at United India Insurance company. I have a elder sister who is currently studying in MSRIT -CS branch .

During these two years, my main focus was studies. I used to watch the news every day during free time. I also used to solve problems on Brilliant.org, which were interesting and engaging. Though I didn't play any during these two years, I like to play video games.
