JEE Chemistry syllabus is divided into 3 broad units:
- Physical Chemistry: This covers concepts about the fundamental unit of everything - atom. Many other important topics like Chemical Kinetics, Thermodynamics and Electrochemistry are also a part of Physical Chemistry.
- Organic Chemistry: This is all about Carbon and its compounds. There are lots of interest mysteries of Carbon and organic chemistry uncovers them.

Chemistry questions asked in JEE Mains require a balance of analytical and memorization skills. Q: Is there negative marking in JEE Main?

As per the exam pattern of JEE Main 2024, 4 marks would be awarded for every question answered correctly, while negative marking will be done for every incorrect answer. This implies that 1 mark is deducted every time a candidate answers the question wrongly. Zero or no marks will be given to un-attempted questions.

As a result, students should not miss it out. Organic Chemistry by LG Wade is arguably the best book for General Organic Chemistry. It covers all the fundamentals.
- Reactions of Benzene: This is another highly important and scoring chapter, particularly for JEE Advanced. Questions asked are fairly standard and those who have practiced enough problems will be able to do well in JEE. There are certain reactions of benzene that don’t follow the regular pattern and are rather classified as exceptions. Students should watch out for these reactions because they are often asked in various competitive examinations. As usual, Organic Chemistry by LG Wade is the book to go if you want to nail this chapter.
- Ores and Metallurgy: This chapter is not only conceptual but also quite asked in JEE. As a result, for those who are aiming for a high rank in JEE, it becomes an extremely important chapter. Students are advised to carefully learn and understand every concept of this chapter from NCERT textbooks because often, JEE paper setters directly pick up questions from NCERT. Those who want to study the advanced concepts of this chapter should study Concise Inorganic Chemistry by JD Lee.
- Qualitative Analysis: This chapter is quite infamous among JEE aspirants because it is arguably one of those chapters which require a lot of memorization. However, this chapter may help students score well because the questions asked in JEE from this chapter are quite straightforward and easy to crack. Concise Inorganic Chemistry by JD Lee is quite good for this chapter.

One very important aspect to score high in Chemistry is to do periodic revision. As humans, we are bound to forget things if we don’t see them often. Q: Is there any change in JEE Main 2025 exam pattern?
Yes, NTA has announced two major changes in JEE Main exam pattern 2025. As per the new pattern, the total number of questions in JEE Main 2025 Paper 1 (BE/BTech) will be 75, 25 each from Mathematics, Physics and Chemistry. Also, there will be no optional question in section B in any subject. Students will need to answer all 5 questions in section B from all three subjects. The marking scheme and total marks remains the same.
Q: Is there any change in marking scheme and total number of questions in JEE Main 2025?
Yes, the total number of questins in JEE Main 2025 have been reduced in all three papers - Paper 1 for BE/BTech, Paper 2A for BArch and Paper 2B for BPlan. The Paper 1 exam will now have 75 questions, 25 each from Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics. In Paper 2A and 2B, the total number of questions have been decreased only in Mathematics section. There will be 25 questions in Mathematics section of Paper 2A and 2B.
NTA has not made any changes in the marking scheme of JEE Mains 2025 exam. Also, the total marks and duration of the exam remains the same.
Q: Which topics were covered in JEE Main 22 January 2025 shift 2 paper?
In the JEE Main 22 January shift 2 paper, chemistry questions were mainly from topics like Electrochemistry, Kinetics, p-block, d-block, Thermodynamics, and Biomolecules. In Mathematics, Key topics included Probability, Matrices, Algebra, Calculus, Vectors, Coordinate Geometry, 3D, and Calculus being dominant. In Physics - Topics such as Mechanics, Current Electricity, Optics, Modern Physics, and Waves were well-represented. However, questions from AC, EMI, and Magnetism were notably absent.
Q: Why does JEE Advanced pattern changes every year?
The JEE Advanced exam is known to be one of the toughest exams in India, with around 200,000 students competing for seats in the country's top institutions. The exam pattern changes dynamically every year, and the examiners want to test not only the students' credibility but also their adaptability. Moreover, they don't want to compromise the exam's core purpose of evaluating students' knowledge by repeating the same pattern every year. Therefore, it is beneficial to make some generalizations about the paper. This strategy ensures equal opportunity for all students and minimizes the popular "luck factor, " which we all have experienced during board exams. Analyzing previous year's papers to identify the weightage pattern for different chapters and deducing the essential topics is a useful approach. Changing the exam pattern also surprises the coaching industry that charges exorbitant fees without any guarantee of success. Lastly, since it is the JEE Advanced, surprise is an essential element, as no examiner wants rote learners to enter IIT and enjoy at taxpayers' expense.
