JEE Advanced preparation tips for Physics
By Aman Goel
Physics is considered to be the most important rank deciding factor in JEE Advanced. This part requires the same amount of practice as required in Mathematics and a sharp memory as in Chemistry. Here in this article, I will give you some tips regarding how to perform well in the Physics of JEE Advanced.
You should make a detailed note of the JEE Advanced syllabus. Also, get an idea of the weightage of each topic. Give time to the topic accordingly. Try to make notes as clear and detailed as possible. It may seem a futile effort in the beginning, but during the time of revision, this will help you a lot. You can also use sticky notes. One more thing you can do is to use different color pens. This will make your notes more clear.

Discussion can be very helpful in this subject. Try to discuss with your classmates, teachers, and seniors. It will help you to see the problems in a different way and make your concepts much stronger. This subject is all about participation. Ask as many questions as you can. Don’t be shy while asking any type of question.
How to solve the questions for practice
- Read the question carefully and make particular notes of the information which is being given. Remember, this is a very important step, as in the beginning, you would have to write all the information but after a little bit of practice, you won’t need to jot down the same, as you would be able to make a mental note of it.
- Use the respective formulas to solve whatever is asked. Be careful about the units.
- It is important to cross verify that answers to questions solved by you are not wrong. For example, if you have to find the coefficient of the friction and your answer is coming out to be greater than one, it means that you have done something wrong.
- Referring to the solution should be your last resort. But if you do refer to the solution, try and understand properly as to where you have made the mistake.
- Make a list of all the questions which you think are important. These questions must contain all the important concepts. So at the time of revision, you can refer these questions to get a quick idea of all the topics.
How to solve questions in the exams
- You can be assured that the calculation part of JEE Advanced questions will not be a problem except for some cases in which you may have to apply a little bit of calculus.
- So your complete focus should be on to understand the problem and get the solution out, accordingly.
- There will be a time crunch so make sure that you get all the information in one reading.
- Check your answers for ambiguity. JEE Advanced is famous for giving confusing options so make sure that your calculation is correct.
- If you are not getting the problem even after reading for two times then don’t waste your time on it. Try another question.
Some tips regarding how to prepare
- If you have just started your preparation for the first time then I suggest you start it by reading basic books like NCERT. It may seem to you that you have a lot of time to prepare but believe me, it will pass very quickly. So you should start your preparation as soon as possible.
- Start making notes from day one. Solve your DPPs (Daily Practice Problems) regularly. Generally what happens is that the students are motivated at the beginning of their preparation but after a couple of weeks they start to show disinterest in the topics and their motivation goes down. Please don’t do that, whatever happens, follow your schedule very strictly. Believe me, after a month or so, your schedule will become your habit.
- If you are preparing for the second time then you really can’t afford to waste a single day.
- You should have self-confidence. Whatever happened in your first attempt of JEE Advanced, cannot be changed. You can only control the outcome of your next/current year paper.
- Start studying the most basic topic. Since you have already studied it once so it will be basically a revision for you. Spend less time on reading theories. You should devote most of your time in solving the questions. Don’t waste your time solving obvious questions. Try to solve the questions which contain lots of different concepts.
- Make a realistic timetable. 14-15 hours of studying including your coaching time are more than enough. Make a 3-hour slot in your timetable in which you study or solve the questions non-stop. This will increase the efficiency of your examination performance. You should follow this very strictly. Remember your performance in the examination is directly related to how precisely you follow this timetable.
- Make your friend circle very small. Avoid using mobile phones for Facebook, Instagram, etc. Also, don’t waste your time in celebrating different festivals or going to any marriage ceremony. This may seem a little harsh but you have to make a commitment to yourself that nothing is more important to you than your career.
Some Relevant Books and Materials
If you have joined any coaching classes then your top priority should be your coaching’s material.
For theory purposes, you can refer to:
- H.C. Verma Concepts of Physics
- Resnick Halliday
For extra questions, you can refer to:
- D.C. Pandey books
- I.E. Irodov (solve only when your preparation is of the top-notch)
Previous years’ papers are a must for you to solve. That will give you the idea of how good your preparation is.
Some Final Hacks
- Don’t take random advice from anyone. You must believe in your teacher. Take his/her advice from time-to-time.
- In your free slot watch motivational speeches. Don’t waste your time watching T.V Series or movies. Believe me, you will get a plenty of time for all that stuff when you will be in college.
- Induce whichever emotion in yourself that you think will keep you motivated. It may be anger or guilt. Bottom line is, you must be fully concentrated during your whole preparation.
- Don’t study anything new when your final exam is one month away. This is the time to refer to your notes. Read them as many times as possible. Make a list of formulas and refer to them in every 2-3 days.
- If you want a top rank in JEE Advanced then your preparation must be of that level such that you can solve the previous years’ JEE problems without any difficulty in an affordable time (i.e 2-3 minutes).
Work hard, stay calm and stay focused. Physics is the most enjoyable subject of JEE syllabus so don’t worry and just enjoy it.
