QS World University Rankings by Subject 2020: IIT Bombay and IIT Delhi among Top 50
Other Indian engineering and technological institutes that got placed among the top 100 are IIT Kharagpur, IIT Madras, and IIT Kanpur.
Quacquarelli Symonds (QS) has released the World University Rankings by Subject 2020 on March 4, 2020. India’s two premier engineering colleges, Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Bombay and Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Delhi have made it in the QS World University Ranking List.
IIT Bombay and IIT Delhi have secured 44th and 47th ranks respectively in the Engineering and Technology category. In the latest rankings announced by the QS, both the IITs have shown major improvement. While IIT Bombay has improved on its 2019’s performance by 9 places, IIT Delhi has moved a massive 14 places up from last year’s 61st position.
Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), Stanford University and University of Cambridge have secured the top three ranks under this category in the QS World University Rankings by Subject 2020.
Other Indian engineering and technological institutes that got placed among the top 100 in this category are IIT Kharagpur (86), IIT Madras (88) and IIT Kanpur (96). However, Two Indian Law Schools have also made it among Top 200 of QS World Subject Rankings.
According to the reports, IIT Bombay’s overall score is 49.4 out of 100. The institute has scored 3.4 in citation per faculty, 54.2 in academic reputation, 1.6 in international students, 71.2 in employer reputation, and 45.8 in faculty-student ratio. All the scores are out of a maximum of 100 points.
Talking about the institute’s improvement in the ranking, IIT Bombay’s Director Professor Subhasis Chaudhuri, stated that the institute’s key strength is its students and faculty members. The credit for this improvement goes to their dedication and hard work.
IIT Delhi’s overall score under the engineering and technology category is 81.4. Speaking on this achievement, IIT Delhi Director Professor V. Ramgopal Rao stated that the institute’s significant performance in the QS World University Rankings by Subject 2020 is the result of various measures taken by the institute to boost its research ecosystem, strengthen its connection with the external stakeholders, and other initiatives taken in the last three years.
In 2018, the Government of India recognised IIT Delhi as the Institution of Eminence (IoE). The Institute provides Engineering & Technology education not only to the Indian students but is an academic home for students coming from more than 30 countries.
IIT Delhi’s IoE status has given it a greater autonomy in matters like collaborations with foreign institutions and hiring foreign faculty.
QS analysed over 22 million papers and produced close to 200 million citations to release the QS World University Rankings 2020. In the ranking list, 1,368 academic institutions have been ranked under 5 broad categories across 48 subjects and 159 locations.
Across all the subjects, QS considered 165 Indian institutions, 502 institutes from UK, Germany & France combined, 441 institutes from the United States, and 360 from China, Japan, and South Korea combined for QS Rankings 2020 by subject.
