Indian Students Still Optimistic About Going To Australia
Even after the recent spate of attacks on Indian students in Australia, the number of Indian students applying for an Australian visa has not declined. In fact, in June, the number was up by eight per cent over May in visa applications from India. The Australian government has already sent three delegations to India to promote Australia as a safe study destination for students. The Australian government is also taking other steps to control the damage done to the country’s reputation as an education provider.

International Math Olympiad: India Bags Five Medals
India staked claim to three Silver and two Bronze medals at the 50th International Mathematical Olympiad (IMO) held at Bremen, Germany recently. A total of 108 countries participated in the world event. Indian team comprised of six members of which three students -- Akashnil Dutta from Kolkata, Ananth Shankar from Chennai and Samir Wagh from Pune -- received Silver medals. Subhadip Choudhury of Midnapur, West Bengal and Gaurav Patil from Pune got two bronze medals.

IITs, IIMs May Soon Have Campuses Abroad
The government has indicated that it may allow the IITs and IIMs to open overseas campuses once they improve their faculty positions. Earlier, a proposal of IIM Bangalore to open a campus in Singapore had been turned down by the HRD Ministry. The government has said that currently it may not be feasible for the IITs and IIMs to open campuses abroad as they are facing faculty shortages and have to undertake 54 per cent expansion in their intake to implement OBC quota.

IT Training For DU Students Soon
The Campus of Open Learning at Delhi University has signed a Memorandum of Understanding with HCL Infosystems, an information enabling company, to impart Information and Communication Technology training to students. The training will be provided to students enrolling for various short-term professional training programmes that were introduced to bridge the skill-gap of its students. As per the agreement, HCL will offer three six-month programmes: Linux with Convergence Technologies Innovation, Web Development Using PHP, and Web Designing to students. The courses will be a combination of conceptual instruction and practical exposure for four months, followed by industry internship for two months.

Rs 14.28 Cr Grant For Kannur University
The University Grants Commission (UGC) has sanctioned a grant of Rs 14.28 crore for Kannur University for the 11th Plan period. The grant has been sanctioned for various projects submitted by the university under its various departments. A sum of Rs.1.7 crore has been earmarked for the activities of the university library, while Rs.2 crore was sanctioned for starting a health centre, Rs.3 crore for campus development, Rs.2 crore for sports facilities, and Rs.30 lakh for basic facilities.

Trespassing Through IIT Delhi? Watch Your Step
The Indian Institute of Technology (IIT), Delhi, is planning to spend Rs 1 crore to beef up its security system. For an extensive security overhaul, the institute has taken up measures that include exhaustive close circuit television surveillance at all entry points into the campus and introduction of electronic access system in hostels and academic areas such as the library and reading room. The IIT campus in Hauz Khas is spread over 325 acres and people from neighboring villages can easily enter through breaches in the boundary walls. The institute hopes to tackle the problem of trespassers and petty thefts better with the new measures.
