Birla Institute of Technology and Science, Pilani
Birla Institute of Technology and Science (BITS) Pilani was founded in 1964 and declared “deemed to be a university" in 1956. The institutes official website claims that the CSE “Department was established in 1971 and is one of the oldest computer science departments in the country. It currently has 30 faculty members and it offers 2 undergraduate and 2 graduate programmes. The department attracts the best students from all over India and has 100% placement record.”
The central library covers an area of about 65,000 sq ft has a collection of over 2,21,000 volumes. It subscribes to 525 periodicals and about 4000 full text e-journals covering theentire range of subjects offered at BITS.
BITS Pilani’s computer science and information systems department has recently benchmarked their curriculum with the top 5 universities in the world. “The department attracts research funding from various govt. agencies like UGC, DIT, DST, Indian Army, and IT industry”, informs the institute’s website.
The sub-subjects students need to study as part of the computer science engineering programme at BITS Pilani are computer architecture, systems & computer networks, algorithms theoretical computer science, software engineering, information systems including databases and computer applications (AI, robotics, graphics, etc)
BITS Pilani offers CSE programmes such as BE (Hons.) computer science, Msc (Tech.) information systems, ME computer science, ME software systems and Ph.D.
National Institute of Technology, Tiruchirappalli
As mentioned on the official website, “The National Institute of Technology, Tiruchirappalli (formerly known as Regional Engineering College), was started as a joint and co-operative venture of the Government of India and the Government of Tamil Nadu in 1964.”
The website also reveals that, “The B.Tech. programme in Computer Science and Engineering is perhaps the most popular programme in the NIT Tiruchirapalli campus with an average intake of 70 students per year.”
CSE students are taught mathematics, basic science (physics and chemistry), humanities (English and management), computer science and engineering. Further bifurcation of the engineering subjects includes studying topics such as theoretical computer science or mathematical foundations of computer science, hardware, system software and applications.
Indian School of Mines, Dhanbad
The computer science and engineering department at Indian School of Mines (ISM) was set up in 1997. ISM offers BTech, MTech, dual degree (BTech and MTech) and PhD programmes in CSE.
“The Department boasts of highly qualified faculty members who are active members of reputed National and International Societies” informs the official website. Further it is explained that the institute is known for its research and development activities. “The major research areas include Cryptography, Computer Networks, Network Security, Parallel and Distributed Computing, Wireless Communication, Wireless Sensor Networks, Software Engineering, Image & Video Processing, Video-on-Demand, Soft Computing, IP Multicasting and Computational Biology, Bioinformatics, Information Retrieval”, as per the website.
As per sources, the institute offers 94 seats under its CSE department.
National Institute of Technology, Mangalore
Department of computer science engineering was established in 1986 at National Institute of Technology (NIT), Mangalore. The Department offers BTech, MTech, MTech (by research) and Ph.D in computer science and engineering discipline.
As per the official website the institute “caters the needs of research activities. The department has signed an MoU with IBM, Intel, Leeds Metropolitan University and others, for academic collaborative projects.”
As per sources, NIT Mangalore offers 60 seats for admissions under the CSE department.
Birla Institute of Technology, Patna
The computer science and engineering department at BITS Patna was set up in 2006. The institute started with only three branches of engineering, which were, computer science & engineering (CSE), electrical & electronics engineering (EEE) and electronics & communication engineering (ECE) with an intake of 40 students in each of these disciplines.
However, at present BITS Patna offers 60 seats under the computer science and engineering department.
As per the official website, “Companies like IBM, Microsoft, Robotech Labs, Nettech India, Kyrion Technologies have provided workshops in areas such as RAD, Linux and Network Administration, Game and Web designing, Animation and Ethical Hacking & Securities, etc.” at the institute.
Jadavpur University (Faculty of Engineering & Technology), Kolkata
The computer science and engineering department was set up in the early 60s in this institute. “It got a big fillip in 1962, when the ISIJU project was undertaken in the Department in collaboration with the Indian Statistical Institute (ISI), Calcutta, to design and build ISIJU-1 computer was build and commissioned in 1966 and the success of this pioneering project prompted the UGC to sanction a computer centre in Jadavpur University”, informs the institute’s website.
The CSE department’s library houses around 6188 book volumes and another 25 international journals.
Jadavpur University (Faculty of Engineering & Technology), Kolkata has 27 full-time faculty members with PhD/DSc qualification and another 22 professors who possess first class master degree.
The institute has 64 seats under BTech in CSE, 36 seats in MTech in CSE, 44 seats in master of computer applications and 34 seats in MTech in computer technology.
International Institute of Information Technology, Hyderabad (IIIT-H)
As per the official website, “The International Institute of Information Technology, Hyderabad (IIIT-H) is an autonomous university founded in 1998. IIIT-H was set up as a research university focused on the core areas of Information Technology, such as Computer Science, Electronics and Communications, and their applications in other domains.”
Admission into this institute is on the basis of a candidate’s JEE scores. However, they need to separately apply for the IIIT-H counseling as well. The total intake in the CSE department of IIIT-H is 80.
Netaji Subhas Institute of Technology, Delhi/NCR
The computer science division of Netaji Subhas Institute of Technology was established in 1984. This institute offers BTech, MTech and PhD programmes in CSE.
A total of 184 students are offered admission into this institute. As per the official website, the computer department provides the below mentioned labs to students so as to give them an opportunity to apply theoretical knowledge and find solutions to challenging practical problems:

Motilal Nehru National Institute of Technology, Allahabad
The computer science and engineering department of Motilal Nehru National Institute of Technology was established in 1977 under the electrical engineering department and around 10 students were admitted in this programme.
“The department has qualified and experienced faculty in the areas of computer architecture, database systems, image processing, artificial intelligence, data mining, wireless and sensor networks, computer networks and software engineering” informs the official website.
It is also communicated that “The Institute has been admitting nearly 814 students to nine undergraduate Bachelor of Technology programmes through All India Engineering Entrance Examination (AIEEE) till the session 2012-13. For session the 2013-14, admission to undergraduate courses will be through Joint Entrance Examination (JEE-Main).”
PSG College of Technology, Coimbatore
PSG College of Technology, Coimbatore was established in 1951 by the PSG & Sons’ Charities Trust. The institute offers educational programmes in engineering, information technology, management and science and technology at the bachelors, masters, MPhil, MS and PhD level.
The BE in computer science and engineering programme was launched in 1987 whereas ME in CSE was inaugurated in 1976 at this institute.
As per sources, the institute has 120 seats in the CSE department.
