UPSEE 2017 College Predictor

Q. Congratulations of your achievement. How are you feeling being the UPSEE 2017 3rd topper? Did you expect it?

A.

The feeling is really great.  As of now I am waiting for JEE Advanced 2017 results which is expected to be announced on June 11.

I kind of was expecting a good rank. My score in the exam was 548 out of 600, though I was expecting a score of 540. After I took the exam, my teachers were of the view that I would get a rank around 100. I never expected that I would get a Rank 3.

Q. What was your rank and score in JEE Main 2017?

A.

My rank in JEE Main 2017 as 149 and my score in the exam was 314/360.

Q. How long have you been preparing for?

A.

I have been preparing for both JEE Main and UPSEE for the last two years. I also took coaching classes for the same.

Q. What was your preparation strategy for the exam? What is the minimum time frame needed to prepare for both the exams?

A.

My strategy was that I followed everything that my teachers would say. If they would recommend a certain book or would advise us to focus more on a certain topic, I blindly did it all. I believe that teachers are the people who are more experienced. We have just two years to prepare. So, it’s better to listen to them than to experiment.

Students can prepare for both the exams simultaneously. If they start preparing for the exam from Day 1, they will not feel the pressure.  If you lag from the very beginning, you will realise – after a month or two – that you have a huge backlog. It will be a pressure upon students. So it’s better to start from the very first day.

To prepare fully for the exam, you need 24 months/two full years if you want a smooth preparation. There are people who crack the exam in one year as well.  But it builds up a lot of pressure.

Q. What was your preparation strategy for JEE Advanced?

A.

My preparation strategy for JEE Advanced was just the same as JEE Main and UPSEE.

However, while solving the practice paper, I would always start with the Chemistry section. This section usually gets solved in half an hour and thus, you have the confidence of getting done with 1/3rd of the paper in a short span of time. Then I would move on to Maths coz it has questions which does not click at the first attempt. I would try and solve as many questions as I can in the first attempt and then move to Physics. In Physics, I would solve all the questions I am able to and them come back to Maths to solve the questions that are left.

Q. What did you do improve your work areas?

A.

My main weak area was Chemistry. I was good at Physical Chemistry but was very weak at Inorganic Chemistry. My teachers suggested me to complete two books – Elementary Organic Chemistry by M S Chauhan and a book by O P Tandon for practicing questions.

After I completed both these books, I was pretty confident that I would be able solve most of the questions in Chemistry.

Q. According to you, what is the difference between UPSEE and other engineering entrance exams?

A.

As per the UPSEE 2016 paper pattern, my teachers estimated that I would get a rank in Top 100. This was because the last year’s paper for quite easy, according to a lot of students who took the exam in 2016.

However, in 2017, I felt that UPSEE was actually better than JEE Main 2017. There were some questions that were genuinely very good; they were better and tougher.

Q. Which institute are you vying for and which course do you want to pursue?

A.

I aim to get into any IIT provided the fact that I get CSE (Computer Science Engineering).

Q. Any expectations from your dream institute?

A.

I want to get the highest placement package ever that anybody has got. It’s a dream for me.

Q. Have you taken any other exam/s besides JEE Main and UPSEE?

A.

No I haven’t. Though I registered for BITSAT, I didn’t appear for it.

Q. Do you think coaching is required to crack JEE and UPSEE?

A.

For JEE Mains and UPSEE, I don’t think you need a lot of coaching. All you need to do is study the NCERT books thoroughly. Its sufficient for UPSEE and JEE Main.

However, for JEE Advanced, you need coaching and extra support and material.

Q. Any tips for aspirants taking UPSEE next year?

A.

I would ask future students to complete the Chemistry NCERT books really well; every single, every single reaction in great detail.  As for Maths and Physics are concerned, they should ask their teachers for the best books. They would be of great help.

Besides this, regular effort is a must. Stop taking long breaks, vacations etc. Focus is very important. Students should understand that it’s just a matter of two years. After that, they can do whatever that want.

Q. What plans for the future? What do you want to become?

A.

As of now, I want to become a software developer. Going for administrative services is a decision my father has left on me. So I need to decide that on.

Like any other software developer, my dream is to get a job at Google.

Q. Tell us something about yourself and your hobbies.
