Meerut's Prakhar Bindal bagged an AIR 1 in UPSEE 2017 exam which was held on April 16, 22 and 23 April. With an overall score of 556 out of 600, Bindal secured 96% in his CBSE Class 12th Boards exam.
According to this 18 year old, to get a rank in exams like JEE Main, JEE Advanced and UPSEE, one needs to be consistent with studies and never leave anything for next day. Bindal, who wants to become a Computer Science Engineer, aspires to get into IIT Bombay or IIT Delhi for his Bachelors.
An avid listener of English songs, this topper loves playing badminton and watching India- Pakistan cricket matches. However, he stays away from social media. In an interview with Shiksha, Prakhar Bindal, UPSEE 2017 Topper with an AIR 1 talks about the difference between UPSEE and other engineering entrances. Read the full interview below.
Q. Congratulations of your achievement. How do you feel being the UPSEE 2017 topper with an AIR 1? Did you expect it?
It feels really good. My parents too are extremely happy. Actually, both my parents and I were not expecting it. Though they thought I would get rank in Top 100 for sure, they never expected me to be the exam topper. This one came as a surprise for us.
Q. What was your rank and score in JEE Main 2017?
I got an All India Rank of 184 in JEE Main 2017. My overall JEE Main 2017 score was 310/360 and my subject – wise score was:
- Physics: 105
- Chemistry: 95
- Mathematics: 110
In UPSEE 2017, I got a score of 556 out of 600.
Q. How long have you been preparing for?
Actually, I joined FIITJEE in Class 9th. So, in Class 9th and 10th, there prepared us for NTSE exam. It was in Class 11th when they started teaching us for JEE. My main aim was JEE Main and JEE Advanced. UPSEE and CBSE Board got covered in the way.
Q. What do you think is the difference between UPSEE and other engineering entrance exams?
The main factor in UPSEE was the number of questions. There were 150 questions in the exam which were required to be solved in just three hours. This was contrary to JEE Mains where we were required to answer only 90 questions in three hours. Speed was the actual factor in UPSEE and that’s also difference between UPSEE and other engineering entrances.
Q. What was your preparation strategy for the exam? What is the minimum time frame needed to prepare for both the exams?
My strategy was very simple. Whatever was taught to me in School and coaching, I used to study that on a daily basis for about 8 hours a day at home. I tried to maintain the pace at which they were covering the syllabus. I took everything simultaneously.
According to me, to get a rank in such exams especially JEE Advanced, students must study for a minimum of six hours a day. Two years preparation is perfect for JEE and UPSEE.
Q. What was your strategy for JEE Advanced?
The level of questions in JEE Main was higher than UPSEE. And the level of questions in JEE Advanced was way higher than in JEE Main and UPSEE. The difficulty level of this exam reached its peak. So, I practiced the questions accordingly.
If speed is the factor in UPSEE, then the level of questions is the factor in JEE Main and Advanced. But, this factor is nullified by the number of questions in UPSEE.
Q. What did you do improve your work areas?
Fortunately, at my coaching, the syllabus got over by August – September, last year. So, I got ample amount of time to work on my weak areas before our board exams. Besides working on our work areas, we also brushed up our strong areas.
For me, Chemistry was my weak area. I couldn’t handle Inorganic Chemistry. This was my biggest problem. I wasn’t able to remember anything in this part. To improve this, I used to write down the reactions in my notebook and used to revise the same in a week or so. This helped me a lot.
Q. Which institute are you vying for and which course do you want to pursue?
Actually, it all depends on my JEE Advanced 2017 results and rank but I will prefer IIT Delhi and IIT Bombay for CSE(Computer Science Engineering).
Q. Have you taken any other exam/s besides JEE Main and UPSEE?
Besides these, I appeared for BITSAT and scored 396/450.
Q. Do you think coaching is required to crack JEE and UPSEE?
I think it is definitely required. It has helped me a lot. I joined FIITJEE in Class 9th and because of this, I was able to clear NTSE, KVPY, and Chemistry and Astronomy Olympiad. I cracked the Olympiads twice – in Class 11th and Class 12th. My rank in KVPY was 59.
Q. Any tips for aspirants taking UPSEE next year?
I would like to say that whatever is taught in the class, one should never postpone it for the next day or week. Aspirants should study, whatever is taught, the very same day.
Besides this, one should love your subject. Never hate it else you will not be able to get a good rank or score.
Q. So, tell us something about your family.
My father works with the AAI(Airport Authority of India) and my mother is a home-maker. I have two elders sister. One is working with an MNC in Hyderabad and other one is in her fourth year BTech.
Q. What are your plans for the future?
As of now, I just want to become a good computer engineer. I haven’t thought about what I want to do after that.
I aim to do something different. I think, I want to develop something new in the field of CSE. I don’t want to lead a normal student life but create a name for myself.
