Bagging an All India Rank 2 in UPSEE 2017, Rohan Gupta from Lucknow believes that consistent hard-work and focus are the keys to success. With a score of 552 out of 600 in the exam, Rohan aspires to get into IIT Bombay to pursue Computer Science Engineering. Besides UPSEE, Rohan also emerged as the JEE Main 2017 city topper and bagged a rank of 43 in the exam. JEE Main 2017 results were declared in April.
Coming from a family of engineers and doctors, Rohan's father secured an AIR 196 in the IIT-JEE back in the year 1988 and joined IIT Kanpur. While his mother Anamika Gupta who is a gynaecologist, cracked AIPMT(All India Pre-Medical Test) in 1991 and got an AIR of 123.
In a candid interview with Shiksha, Rohan Gupta, UPSEE 2017 2nd Topper talks about his success mantras and prep tips for future aspirants. Read the interview below.
Q. Congratulations of your achievement. How are you feeling being the UPSEE 2017 2nd topper? Did you expect it?
Thank you. I am feeling elated with my result. The result came to me as a surprise, I was not expecting it. My parents are extremely happy to know my result.
Q. What was your rank and score in JEE Main 2017? Can you share your subject wise marks for JEE Main 2017 and UPSEE 2017?
My JEE Main 2017 rank was 43 and the subject-wise scores are:
- Physics: 108
- Chemistry: 115
- Maths: 101
UPSEE 2017 score: 552/600
Q. How long have you been preparing for?
I had prepared for two years; since the beginning of my Class 11.
Q. What was your preparation strategy for the exam? What is the minimum time frame needed to prepare for both the exams?
I prepared primarily for JEE Advanced, UPSEE got covered in the way. Two years are sufficient to prepare for both the exams.
Q. What was your strategy for JEE Advanced?
I focused both on my theory and practice; more on the latter during the last few months. I also gave more time to my weaker chapters.
Q. What did you do improve your work areas?
I used to practice a lot. Theoretical portions were well covered in class.
Q. Which institute are you vying for and which course do you want to pursue?
I am still thinking over it. I think I would go to IIT Bombay for CSE(Computer Science Engineering).
Q. Have you taken any other exam/s besides JEE Main, JEE Advanced and UPSEE? What was your score and rank in those exams?
Yes. Besides these, I also gave MUOET 2017. I would like to share that I bagged a Rank of 3 in the exam. I also appeared for BITSAT and my score in this exam was 430.
Q. Do you think coaching is required to crack JEE and UPSEE?
Coaching is very helpful for any competitive exam especially JEE. I had joined FIITJEE.
Q. Can you suggest some books for engineering entrance exam/UPSEE/JEE Main preparations?
I think students should study - NCERT books, HC Verma's Concepts of Physics and Cengage's exam crack series.
Q. Any tips for aspirants taking UPSEE next year?
The paper is generally all about speed so timed practice will be helpful. Speed is the factor in this exam.
Q. So, tell us something about your family? Who all are there and what do they do?
My father is a Software Engineer and my mother is a gynaecologist. My sister is currently in class 12 and preparing for JEE as well.
Q. What plans for the future? What do you want to become?
I am not thinking too far right now. I am just exploring my interests.
Q. Tell us something about yourself and your hobbies? What do you like doing?
I love reading books and am interested in photography. And I also love watching movies.
