With students not paying fees on time, more than 40,000 teachers of 700 private engineering colleges that are affiliated to Dr. APJ Abdul Kalam Technical University (AKTU) have got no salary or with 75 percent to 50 percent cut.

Around 40,000 teachers in 700 private engineering colleges that are affiliated to Dr. APJ Abdul Kalam Technical University (AKTU) for the April month have either got no salary or got it with 75 percent to 50 percent cut, an official said.

In March, around 4,000 teachers working in private engineering colleges affiliated to Dr. APJ Abdul Kalam Technical University (AKTU) had not received their salary as many students had not deposited their quarterly installment of fees, said the official.

There are about 2.5 lakh students studying in private engineering colleges across Uttar Pradesh.

Of these, nearly one lakh students fall under the Economically Weaker Section (EWS) category and their fees are reimbursed by the social welfare department of the government. The fees are reimbursed directly into students’ accounts, who in turn pay to their respective colleges.

While the social welfare department has reimbursed the amount into bank account of students, there are many students from both EWS and general categories who are yet to pay the fees.

"Since the students have not paid the fees, we are only going to pay 50 percent of April salary to the teachers, Anil Agarwal, Chairman, RR Institute of Technology and Management said.

More than 150 private colleges have asked the university to give loans from endowment funds as they do not have money to pay teachers’ salaries. But the university has rejected their demands and has instead asked them to make arrangements of funds for distributing salary.

"These are difficult times and the university is trying its best to find out ways to pay salary to the teachers," Professor Vinay Kumar, Vice- chancellor, Dr. APJ Abdul Kalam University said.
