Women's Universities and Colleges in Rajasthan

Women constitute about 48% of total population of India. Since independence, the government of India has taken several steps to encourage higher education for women in the form of scholarships, counselling, skill-oriented courses, bank loan facilities, etc. However, one of the major steps that the government has taken to ensure greater participation of women in higher education is setting up universities and colleges exclusively for women.

Enrolling in a women only university or college holds many benefits. Students get to participate more in and out of the class. Also, women’s universities/ colleges encourage students to flourish and reach their highest potential. Studies by different organisations show that women who study in women-only colleges or universities emerge as strong and self-assured women who are ready to tackle any daunting challenges that come their way. In India, many strong women who were pass-outs from women’s universities/ colleges have left their mark in their respective professions. Some such renowned women include Anita Desai, Author; Sheila Dikshit, former Chief Minister of Delhi; Sonal Chauhan, Miss India as well as Miss World Tourism, 2005; Ambika Soni, former Minister of Information & Broadcasting; and more.

Currently in India, there are about 799 universities in total of which approximately 14 are exclusively dedicated for women. Among all women universities in India, the maximum number being four are located in Rajasthan. Rajasthan is followed by Tamil Nadu with two women universities. Apart from that, states of Andhra Pradesh, Assam, Delhi, Haryana, Karnataka, Maharashtra, Odisha, and West Bengal contain one women university each.

Banasthali Vidyapith, Jaipur

Founded in 1935, Banastali Vidyapith (also known as Banasthali University) offers undergraduate, postgraduate, doctorate as well as part-time courses to candidates under the streams of Humanities, Teaching, Science, Pharmacy, Engineering, Design, Fine Arts, Management, Aviation, IT & Software, Law, Journalism, and Nursing.

With a deemed university status, Banasthali Vidyapith has been accredited by National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC) with 'A' Grade. The university is also the recipient of SANTBAL Award in the year 2000 for its services in the field of education for women.

Presently, the university is located on an area of 850 acres and offers various infrastructural facilities to candidates such as 29 hostels with a capacity of 110 to 438 students, a huge sports ground, stage room, projection room, air strip of 50,191,418 sq. meters used for training students in gliding and flying, a central library, a community FM radio station that broadcasts educational and entertainment programmes in the campus, a hospital, and so on.

Mody University of Science and Technology, Sikar

Established in 2004, Mody University of Science and Technology is a private university that offers undergraduate, postgraduate, and doctorate courses to candidates under the streams of Science, Architecture, Management, Commerce, Engineering, IT & Software, Design, Fine Arts, Law, Humanities, and Medicine. Some of the popular courses offered at the university are BTech and MBA.

With an objective to empower women in higher education, the university also offers different scholarship schemes to students. IIS University, Jaipur

The IIS University was established in 1995 as International College for Girls (ICG) affiliated to Rajasthan University. However, later the college was given the status of a deemed-to-be-a-university by MHRD under section 3 of UGC Act, 1956 and ICG became the IIS University. Currently, the university offers undergraduate and postgraduate courses to candidates under the streams of Science, Design, Humanities, Mass Communication, Accounts, Arts (Performing, Visual, Fine), Travel, and Management.

Jayoti Vidyapeeth Women's University (JVWU) is a private university founded in 2008. The university offers degree and diploma courses to candidates at Class 10th, undergraduate, and postgraduate levels under the streams of Design, Engineering, Medicine, Science, Teaching, Accounts, IT & Software, Mass Communication, Law, Management, and Humanities.

Till date the university has many awards to its name. Few of them include World Education Award 2013 for e-campus and Dainik Bhaskar B-School Leadership award 2010 for innovative, modern and industry related curriculum.
