Master of Engineering (ME) and Master of Technology (M.Tech) are two-year postgraduate study programmes for engineers. At the postgraduate level, these engineering degree programmes deal with specialisations in specific engineering streams, such as Aeronautical/Aerospace Engineering, Agricultural Engineering, Automobile Engineering, Avionics Engineering, and Biotechnology.

One can opt for ME or M.Tech programmes in traditional engineering streams such as Chemical Engineering, Civil Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Electronics & Communications Engineering, Industrial Engineering, Instrumentation Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, and Mining Engineering.

Postgraduate engineering programmes in new-age disciplines like Communications Engineering, Computer Science Engineering, Information Technology (IT), Marine Engineering, Mechatronics Engineering, Nanotechnology, Telecommunications Engineering, VLSI, and Wireless Communication also find many takers.

Other specialisations in which ME or M.Tech programmes are offered in India are:

  • Control Systems Engineering
  • Metallurgical Engineering
  • Power Systems Engineering
  • Signal Processing
  • Solar & Alternative Engineering
  • Textile Engineering
Top-notch institutions like IITs require candidates to clear national-level or state-level entrance exams, such as Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering (GATE), and appear for interviews or written tests at institute-level.

While ME or M.Tech programmes are offered by prestigious institutions such as IITs, there are engineering colleges in India that offer these programmes in distance or part-time modes too.

Outside of India, courses that offer hands-on experience and applied engineering concepts are called M.Tech degree programmes, while ME degree programmes focus on theory, research and knowledge.

Eligibility

To pursue a ME or M.Tech programme, candidates must have completed BE or B.Tech degree programmes in related engineering discipline. Meritorious students who have completed five-year Integrated M.Sc programmes in related sciences from prestigious institutions might also be considered eligible for the programmes.

Top-notch institutions like IITs require candidates to clear national-level or state-level entrance exams, such as Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering (GATE), and appear for interviews or written tests at institute-level. The admissions to ME or M.Tech programmes are then awarded on merit-basis.

Career Prospects

In India, ME programmes are generally research-based degree courses that are considered parallel to M.Phil or MS degrees in Humanities and Sciences. M.Tech degree programmes are considered more skill-based and prepare students for engineering careers in related industries. However, the scope of ME or M.Tech degree programmes is quite similar in nature in India.

Engineers easily find employment with Central and state government and leading organisations like Department of Atomic Energy (DAE) or Nuclear Power Corporation of India Ltd. Teaching and research careers are also open for engineers who hold postgraduate degrees in their subject.
