Bartending: The truth about this profession
Bartending has always been looked down upon as a profession primarily because of the mind-set of the Indian society which considers bartending to be a B-grade profession. But the truth of the matter is that hotel management (HM) which is considered to be a very popular course among students has bartending as a subject. And these days many HM graduates are seriously considering making a career in bartending.
Confirming this is Nischal Gurung, who has 18 years of experience working in the food and beverage (F & B) industry and an impressive 15 year experience of working as bartender. Having worked as a consultant and trainer for companies such as Diageo India Ltd, Bacardi Martini India Ltd, Pernod Ricard and Dabur, Nischal thought of starting his own training academy and that is when he set up Mixologik, his bar school.
When asked how he made a mark for himself in the industry, Nischal revealed that he became a bartender by chance and he learnt the art of bartending when he was working at the Hyatt Regency. He pops the bottle on intricate details of bartending as a profession and why more youth should consider joining this industry.
Bartending as a profession
Bartending as a profession is very challenging but at the same time fun and also pays you well. One needs to be a skilled technician, an entertainer and a clever manager of people. He/she also requires good human qualities.
Best part of the profession
There are many reasons to smile in our Profession. We get to get innovative in creating new concoctions both alcoholic and non-alcoholic, meet people from all aspects of life. We often see the worst in people, anger, depression, and alcoholism. We work because we also have a chance to touch people's lives every day. It usually isn't a big thing but talking to them, cheering someone up is a rewarding experience.
Worst part of the profession
No family life, late nights (read that as sleep deprieved), dealing with angry, drunk & depressed customers and when everyone is having fun drinking and dancing…we are working (but some of us are happy with that too).
Biggest misconception of this profession
Earlier people felt that one would be dealing with alcoholic people which could lead to fights etc..etc. A lot of parents come and ask me- Do their children also have to drink on job or is there a chance that their child might turn into a compulsive drinker once they start working and other questions on these lines.
Things to keep in mind when pursuing bartending as a profession
Firstly I guide all my students, especially from non-hotel management background, to understand what the hospitality industry is all about and secondly they should possess the basic communication skill (English), as it gives you more confidence.
Bartending as a profession for girls
For girls, bartending is a good career. I have seen a lot of lady bartenders doing exceptionally well and are very successful. But sadly, in India we see Bartending as an alternate career, so we see hardly any girls applying for the course. Also, hotels & restaurants should encourage lady bartenders as they add more flair to the bar.
Placements
Placements have become much easier now compared to 10 years back. That’s because more and more restaurants and hotels are coming and are looking for professionals to handle/ manage their Bar.
Tips/advice to people who want to pursue bartending as a career
Try and understand the industry or department that you want to join. Talk to people from the industry, listen to them and then make up your mind. Passion is important too along with good communication & attitude.
