Mystory@Nishant Kumar: What I would have changed in my college education if I could
I studied Hotel Management from BIT Mesra, Ranchi and stayed in the hostel with lush green surroundings. I was part of a 5-friend group that always hung out together. We even organized theme based parties complete with ethnic cuisine on certain occasions. We had also formed a group that played Cricket department wise. The only challenge we faced was the fear of the senior batch.
The only thing that I regret about my college days was my conservativeness in going out of the campus about which I now realize that I should have been more open. My college maintained a disciplined environment that I feel is proving useful to me today. The learnings I have gained from my college are the importance of grooming, basics of department functioning and knowledge of hospitality.
A few subjects that I studied during the course could have been avoided and a few like Food & Nutrition and Accounting we realized should have been included in the curriculum. Even the major subjects of Hotel Management were taught to us in a superficial manner where we did not gain any in-depth knowledge of the concepts. I have chosen housekeeping looking into the wide range of scope it has and I am glad it has not disappointed me. I engaged in basic operations with eagerness to learn the concepts from scratch. Also, I have gone through all hierarchies of housekeeping practically. Professionally, I have not stuck around with a single organization and kept looking out for interesting and lucrative opportunities.
I have had the privilege of working in prestigious organizations like Aman Resorts, ITC Maurya, Apollo Hospitals and Fortis Healthcare and I must say that I have learnt a lot working in these firms.
