World Tourism Day Observed in India
World Tourism Day (WTD) was observed in many places across Rajasthan but prominently in Jaipur, Pushkar, Jodhpur, Udaipur and Pilani on September 27. Similarly, it was also celebrated at various tourist destinations around the globe.
Since 1980, the United Nations World Tourism Organization has been celebrating WTD on September 27.
According to UN, this date was chosen as on that day in 1970, the Statutes of the United Nations World Tourism Organisation (UNWTO) were adopted and it was considered a milestone in global tourism. The purpose of this day is to raise awareness on the role of tourism within the international community and to demonstrate how it affects social, cultural, political and economic values worldwide.
The year 2010 has been designated as the 'International Year of Biodiversity', therefore, UNWTO decided that WTD celebrations, hosted officially by China should be related to sustainable tourism.
The theme of this year 'Tourism and Biodiversity' would provide opportunity to raise public awareness about two major aspects of tourism as follows.
- Importance of biodiversity to tourism
- Role of sustainable tourism in the conservation of life on Earth
"Tourism and biodiversity are mutually dependent. UNWTO wishes to raise awareness and calls upon the tourism stakeholders and travellers themselves to contribute their part of the global responsibility to safeguard the intricate web of unique species and ecosystems that make up our planet" said UNWTO Secretary-General Taleb Rifai.
Central WTD celebrations took place in Guangdong province in China. Alongside a series of cultural events organized by the Chinese Government, the participants dwelled on the issue that how tourism can contribute to preserving life on Earth and its unique biodiversity.
