DU Arts Admission Cut Offs 2020: How to calculate Best of Four Percentage

One of the renowned varsities in the nation, Delhi University offers admission in its diverse courses and programmes offered in its colleges. The Delhi University admission process commences in the month of May each year. For the majority of the courses offered at DU, admission is done on the basis of cut-offs released by the varsity. However, there are some subjects in which aspirants can secure admission on the basis of an entrance exam. As per DU admission dates, the registration process for courses in which admission is offered basis performance in the Delhi University Entrance Test (DUET) scheduled to start from June. For aspirants who have just cleared their Class 12, need to first take into consideration the best of four subjects, i.e. the highest scoring subjects of four.
How to Calculate Best of Four Subjects for Humanities & Arts
For DU programmes in which admission is offered on the basis of merit, aspirants need to calculate their 'best four' percentage. The process to calculate best of four percentage varies as per the course in which a candidate is applying for admission at Delhi University (DU).

The basic process to calculate the best of four percentage for BA programme admissions at Delhi University are as mentioned below:
- One Language (Core/Elective/Functional)
- Any three elective subjects to be selected. Deduction of up to 5 % on ‘Best of Four’ percentage can be imposed if an aspirant changes the stream for admission to BA programme, from Commerce or Science stream to Arts/Humanities/Social Sciences.
- One non-listed (Academic/ Elective subjects for DU Admissions table mentioned below) subject can be included in calculating the ‘Best of Four’ marks without any deduction.
- While seeking admission in BA (Vocational) only, related vocational subjects can be “treated at par with academic/elective subjects and up to two vocational subjects, which are in a relationship with the programme of study may be included for the calculation of Best Four”, informs DU
- If an applicant opts for Modern Indian Language (MIL) (Except for Hindi) as a subject, then such students may be provided with an advantage of up to 10% in their ‘Best Four’ percentage in DU colleges where MIL is offered as a subject of study. Marks advantage given to students with MIL.
Other aspects that aspirants need to keep in mind while calculating their best of four percentage is that:
- DU colleges will notify the actual deduction (upto 5%) for change of stream beforehand on their website/University website.
- If an aspirant includes more than one non-listed subject in their ‘Best Four’ percentage then deduction of 2.5% each in ‘Best Four’ may be levied in addition to deduction due to change of stream, if any
- DU informs: “All subjects to be included in the calculation of ‘Best Four’ must have at least 70% theory component of the exam. In case, the subject to be considered does not have 70% theory component and 30% practical component, then the marks of theory and practical only shall be converted to 70% and 30%, respectively on pro-rata basis. These new marks will then be considered for calculation of ‘Best Four’ in addition to Point 1.

Any subject apart from the ones mentioned above will be considered as non-electives. However, some exceptions for DU Best of Four Percentage calculation are listed below:
1) Subjects such as Mass Media Studies will be treated as an academic subject for admission only in BA (H) Journalism (Hindi/ English).
2) In a situation, where an aspirant has studied a language as both an elective and core subject then the core language subject is to be treated as language, whereas elective language will be considered as elective/ academic subject.
3) For admission in BA (Hons) Applied Psychology the ‘Best Four’ percentage will be the same as BA (Hons) Psychology.
4) For admission in BA (Hons) Social Work and BA (Hons) Philosophy, the Best of Four percentage will be calculated including one language and three academic/elective subjects.
5) It is mandatory for aspirants to have studied and cleared Mathematics in the qualifying exam for admission in BA (Honours) in Economics.
6) (a)For admission in any language (Honours) course, an advantage of 2% may be given to candidates who have studied that particular elective language.
(b) However, if an aspirant is seeking admission in an Honours course in the language (except English Honours and Hindi Honours) but hasn’t studied it for his/her qualifying exams then 5% will be deducted from their Best Four percentage.
(c) For admission in English Honours and Hindi Honours course, the aspirant must have studied and cleared the respective language in his/her qualifying exam and thereafter should have included that language for ‘Best Four’ percentage calculation.
7) For BA (Vocational) course admission only, related vocational subjects may be treated at par with academic/elective subjects. Apart from this, up to two vocational subjects which are related to the course of study can be included for ‘Best Four’ admission.
University reserved the right to “define any other relevant subjects as an academic/ elective for a particular Honours course”, informs the official website.
