DU lingo: How students speak in the University paathshaala
Yes, there is enough chaos around Delhi University (DU) admissions every year but we are not going to talk about the serious side of DU in this article.
In fact, here we will be talking about the fun side of DU, the real reason why students want to be part of this prestigious university. Yes, we are talking about the life and times of the cool gang going to DU ki pathshaala. Well, anyone who enters the campus finds that every nook and corner of this educational institution has a character of its own.
Here we bring for you some fads and lingo. So, let us start with a short course on what you are sure to encounter at DU colleges so that you do not get baffled, thinking that it is some alien language, on hearing it for the first time:

Univ
Students refer to the University of Delhi as Univ. It is short, it is cool and seems stylish doesn’t it?
Campus
Okay, this is something you should absolutely learn. The term ‘Campus’ is only used to refer to the North Campus of DU. Yes, it is a generic term but take our advice and do not even try to refer to the South Campus by this term. At DU ‘Campus’ is only the North Campus.
Res
DU’s students who stay in hostels are mostly referred to as Res. We believe it is a short form for ‘Residents’ but we are not that sure of its meaning and origin and as to the question regarding why this term is used? Well, your guess is as good as ours.
Amma
The hostel wardens are referred to as Amma irrespective of their gender. And please do not think this is because they have motherly instincts, the only reason why DU’s res call them so is because they keep a strict watch on all of them.
LP
Do not worry, it is not some down market place, LP is actually the short form for ‘Lovers Point’ located at Hansraj College of DU.
Adda
This is the term used by students to refer to their favourite hang out places.
K Nags
Ohkay, when you hear this term being spoken (which will mostly be heard from girls at DU), do not think that some person is soon going to come to nag you. Well, K Nags is the DU lingo for referring to Kamla Nagar market which is a stone’s throw from DU’s Campus and is the one-stop-shop for students to purchase books, designer wear as well as do a bit of affordable shopping at the local flea market.
Soc
If you thought, smelly pair of socks is being referred to here then please give yourself a slap from our side. Soc is the term used to refer to a cultural or departmental group at DU, commonly referred to as a society.
Deb Soc
This may seem like a reference to the legendary Dev Anand Sahab. However, at DU this is the term used to refer to the debating society.
GJams
When anyone says “GJams” do not make any mistake thinking that there’s some traffic jam right outside the campus. GJams is the DU lingo to refer to gulab jamuns because spelling this term out is sure to waste at least a minute of your precious time and it does not sound cool, at all.
CBats
No one is referring to cricket bats here because CBats is the term which students often use to ask each other if they want to have chole bhature and the hotspot for CBats at DU is – Chacha ke Chole Bhature.
Rick
On hearing this word do not expect a handsome foreigner with six pack abs to show up in front of you, because doing so can lead to a lot of frustration as rick is the college lingo for cycle rickshaw.
D School
So, if you thought that this is where the rowdy lot who finally enter the D gang study, you are mistaken my friend. In DU, D School is the term used for Delhi School of Economics in North Campus.
Vella
This is the term used to refer to a person who does nothing and keeps whiling away time and the act of doing this is mostly referred to as vellagiri/ vellapanti (after the release of the movie Heropanti).
BTMC
One of the most hilarious acronyms, BTMC stands for ‘Behenji Turned Modern in Confusion’ and is used to refer to girls who have absolutely no sense of style and fashion. Sometimes students even leave out the ‘C’ and use BTM to refer to female students who were plain Janes when they took admission and are found making desperate attempts at becoming head turners.
Jahnkees
So, DU students are mostly known for their extremely stylish dressing sense. However, there are some students who in this task to look good end up over-dressing and they are often referred to as ‘Jahnkees’. But, this term is mostly used for boys who come to college wearing faded loose pants, tight t-shirts and even sport bleached hair.
Dramchi
This term is used to refer to a melodramatic person or a drama queen. Basically, anyone who has a tendency to cook up stories is called a dramchi.
Khapeter
DU students mostly use this term to describe a person who is very mischievous and keeps playing pranks and sometimes even gets people into a tight spot because of his/her antics.
CATing
This is the way students who are preparing for CAT (Common Admission Test) are commonly referred to as.
Biyatch
This is the stylised way to call a person a B**ch. This word comes in handy when you have to abuse a good friend of yours with a lot of love. What's more, the term can be used for both boys and girls. Lolz!
Yava
DU students mostly use this term to express how embarrassed they are. So, if you find yourself in a situation when you do not know what to do, or when someone asks you some embarrassing question, or asks you something for which you do not have an answer, or even when someone pulls your leg and you don't know how to react, you become Yava.
So, this is how you will find DU res and day-skis talking amongst each other. We do not know about you, but we had a lot of fun researching this article through, thoda sa hum ‘yava’ hue but it is all in good humour.
