East India adopts Meta University concept
Credit transfer and cross university education is no longer a western model. According to an Economic Times report, Jadhavpur University (JU), Calcutta University (CU) and the Indian Institute of Management, Calcutta (IIM-C) which are three of the leading institutes of higher studies in West Bengal have also enrolled for Meta University initiative in the country's eastern region.
The concept of Meta University allows a student to benefit from access to faculty, library and laboratory of multiple institutes while pursuing a degree. The Union Ministry of Human Resource Development (HRD) has approved the concept of Meta University for implementation from the 2012-13 academic session .
With the advent of this system, students can now be part of a credit transfer system between participating universities offering flexibility and cross-university education. Jadhavpur University will act as the nodal institution for the entire eastern India as per the directive of the HRD ministry.
Meta University will bring together CU, JU and IIM-C in terms of research as well as various courses offered to students in areas including public health, education and environment. (Read complete story)
The meta university project was announced by Delhi University (DU), Indian Institute of Technology (IIT), Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) and Jamia Millia Islamia (JMI) in December last year. (Read more)
JMI has already approved public health as a subject for the Meta University. It was now up to the rest of the universities which are a part of the project to "get their act together," Jamia Vice-Chancellor Najeeb Jung told The Financial Express. (Read more)
