Farewell season at DU: Memories, mementoes, music, and lots of mazaa!
By Barkha Sethi
With the end of one more academic session at Delhi University, it’s time for the juniors to bid adieu to their seniors. And so, it’s time for farewell parties too.
Going by the trend, there are basically two types of farewell parties : Official and Unofficial. While the former is organised by the college for departments or the entire college, the latter is organised mainly by college juniors for their seniors.
To know more about the inside story, Shiksha.com caught up with students from different colleges of Delhi University to find out if farewells are as fascinating as fests.
Though the obvious answer was ‘No’, we still tried delving deeper to know what actually happens at these so-called farewell parties at the Delhi University.
Lady Shri Ram (LSR)
Students at LSR were greeted with two farewells : departmental farewell and the college farewell.
The college farewell included a graduation dinner along with some dancing and singing performances by the juniors. The students danced away to glory as the DJ played popular music. The formal party kicked off with performances and ended with dinner.
The love of the juniors for their seniors made the departmental farewell a bit exciting than the college farewell. Every senior was gifted a small memento by their juniors. Students played some fun games as well. The high point came when students were showed a movie that featured life in the last three years of college.
Kamla Nehru College (KNC)
The farewell at KNC was fun-filled and delightful. Unlike other colleges, the event buzzed with games, competitions and performances from juniors. Games included wrapping sarees on boys, guessing the original song from its English translation, etc. A video, capturing memories of their last three years at college, created by juniors, overwhelmed the seniors with emotions.
Every student was endowed with an interesting title to create lifetime memories.
Janki Devi Memorial College (JDMC)
JDMC had a twist in its farewell party where not only students but teachers were also on stage to bid a memorable farewell to the third year students. The teachers prepared a dance performance for their students which was a fusion of songs from different states. The societies of the college also participated in the mission to entertain their seniors for the last time. Performances included dances, songs and fashion shows. Students also exchanged gifts and chocolates with their seniors.
Shri Ram College of Commerce (SRCC)
Besides being famous for its fests, SRCC is quite known for its farewell dinners too. Be it official or unofficial, the arrangements are different from others and well planned.
Students, on the farewell day, were asked to come in their best traditional dresses i.e. suits for boys and sarees for girls. Western and traditional dance societies gave performances with full enthusiasm. The singing society, Arohan, did not leave any stone unturned to spread its melody and charm everywhere.
Juniors read out messages for third year students from the popular places of the college. Seniors were gifted with t-shirts and were asked to burn candles at their favourite spot in the college. The movie of their three year’s journey brought happy tears and lots of smiles.
The unofficial farewell was arranged at Pangaea Pub, at The Ashok Hotel.
St. Stephen’s College
The farewell party at St. Stephen’s included a nice dinner party. The students were invited to the college lawn which was lit up with bright lights and had a dance floor. While one corner was meant to chit-chat, the other was meant to dance.
A montage of memories was the best part of the event. Juniors were given a chance to dance with their seniors and they called it the “couple-dance”. The paper dance stole the show and the college’s band performance was a big hit with everyone.
Deshbandhu College
Like other colleges, juniors at the Deshbandhu College performed for their seniors. Every third year student received mementos and students were given titles along with their best photos!
The names of the ‘popular students’ were to be guessed through taglines prepared by teachers. Besides this, they were also gifted their personal grad caps (graduation caps). Before having dinner, everyone saw their journey of last three years via a customised video made especially for the graduating batch.
Daulat Ram College
The farewell at this north campus college was filled with fun activities and games that included lemon balancing in which every girl clad in a saree had to walk with a spoon in her mouth balancing the lemon. Pictures with graduation hats added to the nostalgic moments of the final year students.
While students received trophies, the college arranged for a DJ for them to dance to the tunes of all the new Bollywood numbers. Each student was labelled with a title and given a sash. Teachers gave speeches to appreciate and motivate students to face the future. The event concluded with a lunch organised for students.
