Gargi College: The star college of Delhi University

A perfect balance between academics and extracurricular activities is what sets it apart. Over the years, Delhi University's Gargi College has managed to produce female students who have outperformed in both the arenas. "You can attribute it to the amazing college societies and the tremendous exposure one gets here," says Ashima Gupta a first-year student. From performing arts, creative writing to sports like basketball, tennis, and volleyball, the young ladies are encouraged to try out everything tp discover their potential. "I have always nurtured a love for writing and the college gave me the platform to present my ideas," Gupta adds.

USP: In 2004, Gargi College was one of two colleges of the University of Delhi to be awarded the title College with Potential for Excellence by the University Grants Commission. The Union Ministry of Science and Technology has conferred the title Star College on the College and also given a grant for setting up a bioinformatics laboratory.

Faculty: The college has over 150 teachers and support staff.

Programmes: The programmes offered at Gargi College include chemistry, botany, zoology, economics, history, English, political science, BCom, Hindi, Sanskrit, microbiology etc. The college also provides add-on courses, including Advertising & Marketing Communication, Banking & Financial Services and Mass Communication.

IT quotient: The college website is comprehensive and gives out the course content of all subjects along with a list of applicable readings. Information about all college societies is also readily available online. Students can also visit the website to know about their timetable based on their course, attendance restrictions and information about various college societies.

Infrastructure: The college infrastructure includes computer laboratories, free internet, a seminar hall furnished with a state-of-the-art projection system, classrooms fitted with audio-visual gadgets, renovated science laboratories with the latest equipment, a bioinformatics laboratory, a research wing and a recently-built auditorium.

Gargi has a fully-computerised library with a wide array of books to choose from. It boasts 60,469 volumes in the library's main collection. It also subscribes to a number of national and international journals and magazines for reference. Other amenities in the college are a placement cell, Retreat (the students' common room), a film club, and a cafeteria, among others. There is a large playground for playing lawn tennis, cricket, volleyball, basketball and athletics. Facilities for indoor games are provided in the recreation room.

Hangout joints: While GK and Sarojini Nagar top the list for shopping, Select City Walk and PVR Saket win hands-down for movies. To grab a quick bite outside the college, students flock to Mithas and CCD bang opposite the campus.

Students speak: "The college brings out the best in you. It gives you tremendous exposure and an opportunity to understand yourself better. The strong impetus on extracurricular activities along with academics brings out the best in the students, says Alina Hashmi, a second-year student.

Clubs and societies: Gargi has a rich extracurricular culture which is sustained by its active societies. From theatre to dance, the college societies offer tremendous scope to a student to discover whatever hidden potential they might have. Some of the societies prominent during the Delhi University's fest season are the film club, Quizzito for quizzing, Samiksha for Hindi debates, QED for English debates, Hues for fine arts, Iris for photography, Upstage for dramatics, Kshitij for street play, Euphony for western music, Samranjini for Indian music, Sparx for choreography, Enliven for western dance, and Nazaakat for Indian dance. Students from universities and colleges across Delhi make a beeline every year for Reverie, the annual cultural festival.

Gargi was established in July 1967, in a school building at Lajpat Nagar, where it offered only two programmes, BA (pass) and Pre-Medical. Eventually, it became a constituent college of the University of Delhi and was later recognised by the University Grants Commission. The College shifted to the current location at Siri Fort Road in 1976-77.

The Gargi Café is where all the action is inside the college. The café has an exciting menu of samosas, gol gappas, spicy chaat, soda, fruit juice, crispy spring-rolls, pastries and cakes. The food is decent for its price. The next best place to hang out is the common room, where students catch up with their sleep and daily dose of gossip.
