High standards
Ramnarain Ruia College of Arts and Science, more popularly known as Ruia College, was established in 1937 in Matunga, a central suburb of Mumbai, under the Shikshana Prasaraka Mandali, Pune.
Known as one of the finest academic institutions in the city, Ruia College is affiliated with Mumbai University and was got grade ‘A’ accreditation from NAAC in 2007.
The alumni list includes Justice Hemant Gokhale and former Maharashtra chief minister Manohar Joshi.
Programmes: BA, BSc, Bachelor’s in mass media and Bachelor’s in library and information science. Certificate courses in basics in neuropsychology, calligraphy, journalism, slum Studies, proof-reading, translation skills. Diploma courses in accounting & taxation, slum studies. Basic course in analytical chemistry for non-chemistry students and food science & quality control. At the postgraduate level, MSc and PhD in botany, chemistry, microbiology and zoology. PG diploma courses are offered in industrial analytical chemistry, and accounting taxation & law.
Extra-curricular activities: The Vidyarthi Prathinidhi Mandal (Student Representative Organisation) organises co-curricular and extra-curricular activities. Under the VPM are other organisations and clubs such as a career guidance cell, dramatic circle, quiz club, Le Cercle Francais, film society etc. The college also has a gymkhana and an NSS and NCC cell.
The VPM organises an annual cultural festival, Utsav, which is the most popular event of the year. It also organises Rose Day, Traditional Day etc.
Infrastructure: The college library was built in 1937, making it more than 70 years old. The library houses 1.2 lakh books, periodicals, national and international journals, magazines etc. The library has microfilms, CDs, DVDs, audio cassettes etc and also a rare-books section and an e-learning centre.
The science faculty has UG and PG labs for all subjects, with state-of-the-art facilities. Research programmes in chemistry, biology and biochemistry are offered up to the PG level.
The mass media room of the college is one of the best in Mumbai, with facilities to project live television on a screen.
A unique feature of Ruia College is the Self-Vision Centre for visually impaired students, who can record lectures and take printouts of notes at the centre. The college currently has 60 to 70 visually impaired students.
