The Indian Knowledge Systems (IKS) semester course at the Indian Institute of Technology Gandhinagar (IITGN) will have the next set of lectures dedicated to the interpretation of the 'Historical Methods/Traditions in Early India'.

IIT Gandhinagar is all set to launch a semester course on ‘Historical Methods in Early India'. The Indian Knowledge Systems (IKS) semester course at the Indian Institute of Technology Gandhinagar (IITGN) will have the next set of lectures dedicated to the interpretation of the 'Historical Methods/Traditions in Early India'. The lectures will be delivered by a cultural and intellectual historian of early South Asia, Shonaleeka Kaul. Shonaleeka Kaul will impart her knowledge regarding the traditions in early India with the candidates in two lectures. The lectures will take place on February 19 and 20, 2020, from 3:30 to 5 pm, at IITGN campus, AB 1/102.

These lectures are being conducted on the theme of ‘The Ancient Idea of India’. The lectures are a part IKS semester course’s fourth edition. During the lectures, Kaul will explain the fundamental necessity and logic of allowing pre-modern notions, alternative, methods, and vision of history from the non-European world. The lecture will also talk about the historical traditions that flourished and originated in early India across a host of inscriptions, texts, genres, regions, forms, and concepts. It will also underline the firm misconception that the early Indians did not and could not write history.

Eligibility

The institute has kept the course open for students from other institutions in Ahmedabad, Gandhinagar. Also, anyone, who is truly interested in understanding and studying Indian knowledge systems can also join the course.

How to apply

Students who are interested in the course can join by filling an online registration form on the website- iks.iitgn.ac.in. According to the report, classes for this course will be held from 3:30 pm to 5 pm on most Wednesdays and Thursdays.

About Shonaleeka Kaul

Shonaleeka Kaul has written several articles and books on the cultural history of India and the South Asia region. Currently, she is an associate professor at the Centre for Historical Studies, Jawaharlal Nehru University. She has also been the Jan Gonda Fellow in Indology at Leiden University, the DAAD visiting professor at the South Asia Institute, Heidelberg University, Germany. Kaul has also worked as the Malathy Singh Distinguished Lecturer in South Asian Studies at Yale University, USA.
